2nd Update: Crash Kills Floral Park Man

Car strikes Jamaica Bearings building.

A Floral Park man was killed Tuesday when his car crashed into a building on Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park.

According to Nassau County police detectives,  Michael P. Dunne, 41,  was traveling west on Jericho Turnpike in a 2002 Toyota Corolla when his vehicle crossed the double yellow lines into the eastbound lanes.

The vehicle then struck the building, Jamaica Bearings, at 1700 Jericho Turnpike, on the south side of the road.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  There were no other injuries reported and the investigation is ongoing.

Traffic was blocked for several blocks on Jericho Turnpike while police investigated the accident.  Vehicles were rerouted onto Leonard Boulevard and New Hyde Park Road before Jericho reopened at midday.

Dear NHP Patch,
I think it is IRRESPONSIBLE journalism and editing to post a picture of a FATAL crash with the car and license plate in full view in the photos! The family could not have all been notified by the time this was posted. Great scoop in NHP - hope the family are not subscribers

News12 is reporting that the driver was seriously injured, no mentions of fatalities.

It was reported at the scene as a fatal. Also, from Newsday:

Police are reticent at the moment.

This happened on my corner. I live on South 18 Street. I saw the scene as I walked to the store yesterday morning. Such a horrible tragedy . Last night as I walked by I saw that there is already a memorial of flowers there. My heart goes out to his family. This is the third time that a car has struck that building in a matter of months.

People should stay off their cell phones.

Kristen M. You're so ignorant! How dare you make a comment when you don't know what happened! I suggest you shut your pie hole and mind your own business! You're such a loser! Thank you to all the people who are sending their condolences to the Dunne family and loved ones. This was such a terrible lose to all who knew Mike Dunne. May he RIP

Kristin, How ignorant can you be? Without knowing facts, but was written in this story, you make the assumption that the driver was on their cell phone. How would you feel if you knew the person that was killed and someone made an assumption like this.
Next time you decide to open your pie-hole and spew out verbal diarrhea, get the facts first.
Can't believe someone can be as cold-hearted as you can make such an ill-informed comment. I can only guess you have never gone through what Mike's family and friends have gone through for the past week. I can.

Patty, really? Any thoughts on why that is happening? It's not as if the building were right at the curb. Is there something odd about the curve of the road at that spot?

Pam, I really do not know why. I have asked myself that same question. Yes there is a curve in the road there but I do not know if that is the problem. The other accidents that happened were just a few feet away from the corner and a utility poll was knocked down at the scene of the last accident before this one. I am always a pedestrian as I do not drive and I pass this spot every day multiple times and I now think of my safety on the sidewalk.

I think Patty is trying to start a little something here, (why I dont know) Ive lived in NHP for 41 years, and am a member of the local volunteer Fire Department for the past 15, We (The New Hyde Park Fire Department) have not responded to any accidents at this location (which is directly across Jericho Turnpike from our fire House) for any accidents that have hit the building in the past 10 years. It seems that the driver of this vehicle might have had a medical condition ??? I cant be for sure im not a doctor but, their has to be an underlying fact as to why he crossed traffic without slowing or breaking, for him to hit the wall at that speed and his car to be destroyed like it was, without using his brakes their has to be a reason we are not being told yet. Thank goodness that there were no other victims. God Bless Mike Dunne and his family, another young person to be taken before his time.

Kristen, you should not make such stupid comments when you know nothing. How dare you say something like that, when you dont even know what happened. Have some respect for us that are suffering from him loss.

NHPVolley, thank you for your response. He will be dearly missed.

Ok.. Excuse me NHPVOLLEY, I am not trying to start anything.. why in the world would I do that? And your comment about not responding to any other accidents at that sight makes no sense to me as I know for a fact that a few months back a taxi hit the building and knocked down a poll causing a power outage. The poll has been replaced. You can walk right under it and still see the remains of the one that was there still strapped to the new one. I suggest you check the facts. And I can not believe you made such an ugly allegation. Not very nice .

NHPVOLLEY, I do not understand why you are attacking me. I never tried to make this about me. I made a comment and then answered a question that was asked of me. As I said in my first post here it was a terrible tragedy and I am so sad for his family. You are attacking me here in a public place.. maybe it is you who needs the attention.

Mike Dunne will be dearly missed by many people - this is NOT to forum to make comments about being on cell phones or the like; we do not know what caused the crash. All I know is that a good friend is no longer with us.

People should not say something they know nothing about. Mike Dunne will truely be missed. Rest in peace Michael.
