New Hyde Park Memorial Students of the Month: February 2012

These students were named as students of the month for their respective departments.

The following students at New Hyde Park Memorial have been named as students of the month for their respective departments and was submitted by the teachers of the respective departments:

Music: Samantha Bangug

  • The Music Department Student of the Month is Samantha Bangug.  Samantha has been a member of the Orchestra program for five years.  She is an extremely talented Violinist and Pianist.
  • Samantha is the Principal Violinist in the Senior High Orchestra and String Ensemble.
  • Besides these organizations, Samantha also is a member of the Children’s Orchestral Society Orchestra, a youth Orchestra that performs yearly in Lincoln Center. Among Samantha’s other accomplishments this year, she was selected to perform with the Division 5 All-County Orchestra. This performance was held recently at the Tilles Center on the campus of C.W. Post University.
  • This past fall, Samantha competed in a Concerto competition sponsored by the Children’s Orchestral Society.  For this competition, Samantha played a piano concerto written by Dmitri Shostakovich.  Her second place in the competition was just another example of her outstanding talents and abilities.

World Language: Allison Bauer

  • Félicitations à Allison Bauer, L’Élève du Mois de Février! Congratulations to Allison Bauer, Student of the Month for February! Allison is a French III student in Madame Kort’s class and as such performs exceedingly well.
  • She consistently earns grades of one-hundred percent and is truly a talented French student. Her writing in the target language is simply beautiful and she works diligently and earnestly.
  • The World Languages Department is proud to have a student of Allison’s caliber and we wish her much continued success in her French studies.

Art: Justine Biazon – Media Arts

  • The New Hyde Park Art Department is very proud to name Justine Biazon Art Student of the Month.
  • Justine has been part of the Art Department since the eighth grade and has grown immensely as an artist.
  • Justine is currently enrolled in Media Arts class as a tenth grade student and has excelled at the art of 35mm black and white film photography and traditional darkroom techniques.
  • Justine has proven to be a very hard worker and is constantly improving her technique and creative visions to produce high quality black and white photographs. 

Social Studies: Carolina Buitrago

  • This month’s student of the month for Social Studies is an eleventh-grader, Carolina Buitargo. Carolina is doing exceptionally well in both Ms. Burkhard’s Global Studies class and Mrs. Esposito’s US History & Government class.
  • She is a conscientious student who consistently works hard and surpasses all expectations.
  • Her love for education and history is evident in all of her assignments. Carolina Buitrago is a great scholar matched with a genuine personality. These qualities will take her very far in the future.  

Business/ Technology: Tim Foley

  • The Business/Technology Department is proud to announce that Tim Foley has been named “Student of the Month.”
  • Tim has successfully completed three business classes which included Career and Financial Management, Business Communications, and Sports Marketing.  Currently, he is enrolled in Personal Finance. 
  • Tim not only excels in the classroom but in extra-curricular activities as well.  He is a member of the Model UN and The Chariot newspaper.  In addition, Tim is a member of the Gladiators varsity football and varsity basketball teams.
  • Tim enjoys his business classes and would like to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism. His strong worth ethic, positive attitude and self-discipline will undoubtedly help him achieve high levels of success in high school, college, and the world of work.

Library: Victoria Lapkiewicz

  • Victoria Lapkiewicz is the Library’s Student of the Month for January.  Victoria is a ninth grader who works in the library during her free periods.  She has only been working in the library for a few weeks and has already been a tremendous help.  Victoria has been helping to prepare the library’s new books, in addition to doing a great deal of shelving.  She likes working in the library because she finds it relaxing.  Victoria’s favorite class is Art and she loves to draw.  She also likes to read and prefers scary books.

Math: Steven Lin

  • Congratulations to Steven Lin for being selected as Student of the Month in Math.
  • Steven is currently a student in Mrs. Pazik’s 10A class.  His determination, dedication and academic achievements so far this year in the Algebra 2 / Trigonometry class have placed Steven well above other students at his level.  Almost all of his work is near perfection.  He offers his help to his classmates when they are having difficulty understanding a certain topic.

Science: Sheikh Muizz

  • It is an honor to announce Sheikh Muizz as the Student of the Month in Science.
  • Sheikh is an exceptional student who maintains a 98 average in Mrs. Stone’s tenth grade Advanced Regents Chemistry class. Sheikh is an intelligent and hard working young man. He is independently motivated and driven to do his best. He always goes beyond what is expected of him.  Sheikh routinely asks questions and tries to make connections with prior learning. He is also not afraid to challenge the teacher if he believes there has been an error and seek help when it’s needed. His attentiveness and eagerness to learn more about the world around him makes him an absolute pleasure to have in class. Beyond academics, he is extremely respectful of his teachers and classmates alike.  He is always there to help others, which speaks volumes about his character.
  • After school Sheikh enjoys playing basketball and practicing the violin for orchestra class.  He is also an active member of the Spanish Club, Mathletes, and the Muslim Student Association. In the future he is interested in going to medical school to become a surgeon.  Currently, he volunteers in a local clinic to give back to his community.  Congratulations again Sheikh! This is a well deserved honor.

Student Activities: Marissa Ngai

  • Marissa Ngai is a consummate professional when it comes to her duties as the Design Editor on the Lance staff.
  • The combination of her tireless commitment and strong aesthetic point of view has been essential to the production of the yearbook. Throughout all the long hours and late nights, she has demonstrated such a natural affinity for creatively designing spreads, and her charming idiosyncrasies always serve to lighten the mood even during the most stressful nights before deadlines. The latter is most notably reflected in her team camaraderie, where her affability really shines as a testament to her ability to work with others.
  • Furthermore, she is always willing to take on responsibilities outside of her own without the slightest hesitation. Despite all the tremendous workload placed on this young lady, she has continued to impress with her diligence and artistic sensibility. No one is more genuinely deserving of this recognition than Marissa.

English: Dennis O’Boyle

  • Dennis O’Boyle entered my English Enrichment class in late October and quickly became a top-notch student and leader. Dennis unfailingly does his best and works very hard to improve his reading and writing skills.  His hand is always in the air ready to participate and when he does, I know his answer will be well thought out and accurate. Dennis is a role model for my Enrichment students. They listen to his ideas; think about his logic, and work to achieve similar success.

Academy of Finance: Elissa Pehr

  • The Academy of Finance is proud to recognize Elissa Pehr as Student of the Month.
  • Elissa is an outstanding academic student. Her teachers report that she is a dedicated, hard-working student that is a pleasure to have in class.  Elissa is involved in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and competes on the Track & Field team. Outside of school and on weekends Elissa assists her father with his locksmith business.  Elissa has been inducted into the National Honor Society, Business Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. 
  • Over the summer Elissa worked to help plan a 9-day camp for 500 children. Elissa says, “It was very exciting! This experience taught me to demonstrate excellent leadership skills and, in the process, attempt to please everyone by doing things properly and fair.”
  • Next year Elissa will begin her college career. Her first choice for school is SUNY Binghamton. Elissa’s career goal is to become a physician’s assistant.  We are all so proud of Elissa’s accomplishments and wish her much success in the future.

Family and Computer Sciences: Narindra Persaud       

  • The Family and Consumer Sciences student of the month is seventh grader Narindra Persaud.  He was chosen for his excellent effort, determination and achievement in the Home and Career Skills course. Narindra is presently taking Home and Career Skills and is accomplishing the task marvelously. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department wishes Narindra much success in his goals and hopes that he will continue to be a great asset to our department.

Health: Ania Zolyniak

  • Ania is a student in Coach Robins Health 7 Grade class for the first semester.  Ania does a great job in participating in all lessons.  Ania has a 100 grade point average for the second marking period.  She comes to class ready to learn and always asks intellectual questions.

Physical Education (Girls): Taylor Kerrane

  • Taylor is an outstanding student in the leader’s Physical Education program. Taylor is a leader in a ninth and tenth grade Physical Education class. She is an excellent role model for the younger students in and out of the gymnasium. Every class Taylor demonstrates leadership, communication and cooperation skills. Taylor is the captain of the Romanettes team, in which she creates and instructs the dance routines. Taylor also performs for the Petri School of Irish Dance. She has traveled the United States and has been to Ireland to perform. Taylor placed first at Nationals and second at Regional’s this year.  In Ms. Rizzuti’s ninth/tenth grade PE class Taylor taught the female students an Irish step dance routine. The female students loved the lessons. She is respected by her peers and the Physical Education staff for being a hardworking student and athlete.

Physical Education (Boys): Robert Mirabile

  • Robert is an outstanding student in Ms. Rizzuti’s seventh grade Physical Education class.  Robert is a pleasure to have in class. He is a respectful young man with an excellent athletic career ahead of him. In every class Robert demonstrates leadership, communication and cooperation skills. He is encouraging to the other students in his class and understands that not every student is at the same level of athleticism.  The Physical Education staff would like to thank Robert Mirabile for being a hardworking student and athlete.
