Art League of Nassau County Welcomes Donna Harlow Moraff

West Islip artist, Donna Harlow Moraff showed her talent with pastels at the September meeting of the Art League of Nassau County. She demonstrated a landscape of a marsh area in Suffolk County to members, friends and visitors.

"Long Island is a beautiful place with marshes. I will go driving around with my husband and say, 'Oh my God! Stop the car!' and take a number of photos," Moraff said. She likes the North Fork especially.

Donna prefers to take reference photos and then interpret them with pastels in her studio. She uses one photo on her I-Pad for her main inspiration with its true color, along with other printed photos for additional reference.

Moraff had many good tips for artists to improve their own pastel paintings. She recommended using at least 90 colors and recommends Nu-Pastels by Prismacolor. For paper, a mid-tone "Pastel Mat" gives a "buttery feel." Donna prefers museum glass for framing.

Donna works in many mediums and is a prize-winning member of art groups on Long Island. Her work has been in many shows, including the Long Island Professional Arts Showcase: "Seven Painters & Seven Sculptors." Moraff conducts workshops and classes in various art organizations. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and shows at the Phoenix Fine Art Gallery in Bellport.

The Art League of Nassau County, formed in 1925, has four goals for its members: To exhibit their art in public, have workshops, to give artists an opportunity to join together in fellowship and to host monthly demonstrations by our area’s top fine artists in various mediums.  It meets at the Clinton G. Martin Recreation Center, located at 1601 Marcus Avenue, at the corner of Marcus and New Hyde Park Road near Union Turnpike. The next meeting will be October 18th with a demonstration by a professional artist. All New Hyde Park residents are invited.
