Bites Nearby: Afghan Grill Kabob House

Experience authentic Afghan specialities at this Hillside Avenue eatery.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, New Hyde Park Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

For those who are unfamiliar with Afghan cuisine, Afghan Grill Kabob House may be just the place to become acquainted. Open for five years, the family-run restaurant has received positive reviews from Zagat Survey, Newsday, and The New York Times.

Specializing in rice, stews, and of course, kabobs, Host Weis Shair describes the food at Afghan Grill Kabob House as “really authentic.” Shair encourages newbies, saying that all it takes is one taste to get hooked.

Along with salads and soups, diners can choose from an array of traditional Afghan appetizers to start with. The options include “Bolanee” or potato turnovers with scallions and seasonings and steamed dumplings called “Manto” that are stuffed with ground meat and topped with seasoned yogurt and tomato sauce.

A variety of chicken, fish, beef and lamb kabobs are on the menu along with several other entrees, including a list of vegetarian options. Among the selection of stews offered, the restaurant is most noted for their tender lamb shank. All entrees are served with basmati rice and green salad; shredded carrots and raisins can be requested as an alternative.

The restaurant’s welcoming dining room provides a quaint atmosphere to enjoy with company. Combination platters allow customers to choose from a number of different kabobs and entrée items for meals designed to serve two, four or an entire family.

Afghan Grill Kabob House is open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner and although no alcohol is served, diners are welcome to bring their own wine. Takeout and catering are available.
