Bites Nearby: Murphy's Bar and Grill

A fun and friendly Irish pub in Mineola.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, New Hyde Park Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

With a fully stocked bar that includes a wide selection of beers, well prepared pub food and regular special events scheduled throughout every week, Murphy’s Bar and Grill is made to accommodate good times among good company.

In the middle of the busy Mineola court district, the authentic Irish pub recognized by its all red exterior is a relaxed spot filled with amiable hospitality.  Open since April of 2007, Murphy’s operates 365 days a year for lunch and dinner. Fare includes typical pub standards along with a few not-so-typical indulgences.

The restaurant's Irish breakfast, which includes a hearty mix of black and white puddings, sausage, grilled tomato, French fries and eggs prepared any way you would like, is served all day every day. Other Irish-influenced dishes are the Sheppard’s Pie and Bangers and Mash: Irish pork sausage with mashed potatoes topped with homemade onion gravy.

Sandwiches and wraps make up most of the menu along with an extensive list of salad selections such as Cobb Salad, Smoked Salmon Salad, and Mexican Salad with homemade lime vinaigrette.

And of course, what would a pub be without a good hamburger? Murphy’s has several, but one certainly stands out above the rest -- Murphy’s Three Pound Burger Challenge, which is 48 ounces of beef, cheddar cheese, Irish bacon, sliced onion and tomatoes served with a side of French fries. If you finish it in an hour it’s yours for free with a few other added benefits.

Owner Mike Murphy explains, “If the challenge is completed, your name goes on the Murphy's wall of fame, you receive a Murphy’s polo shirt, one free pint of our house ale every time you visit and of course bragging rights.”

According Murphy, the restaurant sells about two or three of the massive burgers a week. So far, only two bold contenders have completed the task at 47 and 48 minutes respectively.

The big screens around the bar are just right for enjoying the game, but if sports aren’t your thing, there is something to satisfy everyone with special deals and events running frequently throughout the week.

Twenty-five cent wings are available every Monday night, all weekend long, and during Happy Hour. Murphy's Happy Hour, Monday-Friday, 4:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m., includes three dollar mixed drinks, wine, domestic bottles and two for one draft beers; Tuesday night jazz band; live DJ on Friday night; karaoke every Saturday night; and traditional Irish music once a month.

On and off-premises catering offered.
