Construction For Hillside Library Traffic Light Is Underway

A traffic light three years in the making should be installed early next year.

If you noticed some construction on the sidewalks of Lakeville Road near the , it's the work being done for the traffic light coming early next year.

Legislator Richard Nicolello said that the Department of Public Works has assured him that this light will be in place early next year.

This light has been needed for the approximately three years that the library has been at this location, Nicolello said. He described cars flying up and down Lakeville Road and said that crossing this street is "really dangerous."

The traffic light will be timed to the existing light up the block on the corner of Lowell Avenue near the New Hyde Park Funeral Home, Nicolello explained. He also said that he doesn't anticipate any back flow of traffic onto Jericho Turnpike, which is a block away.

At the library board of trustees meeting Thursday night, Trustee Maura Rossi said that the work to put in the traffic light should be completed in two months. Library Director Charlene Noll added that Nicolello has been very supportive since the start of the process to get this traffic light. This process involved petitions, calling and bringing some government officials to the library to watch people cross the street.
