Hillside Public Library Board Notebook

Here's a recap of the meeting.

If you missed Thursday's board of trustees meeting, here are some of the highlights:

  • During the director's report, Charlene Noll noted that the library finished its 2010 New York State annual report for public and associated libraries. The report's data was based on the time period from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Some of the highlights of the report are:
  1. Approximately 10,000 new materials were added to the library. Now there are about 89,745 things in the library. There are 2,887 audio units and there are 3,439 videos. There are 151 subscriptions.
  2. Programs in the library have gone up according to the report. This year there were 844 programs compared to the previous year's 674. There were over 20,000 who came to these programs, which is up from more than 17,000 the previous year.
  3. Questions to the reference desk went up significantly. There were 43,000 questions asked according to the report; the previous year there were 26,000 questions. Noll attributed this growth to the job market and people searching for information related to that.
  • Noll noted that this month is National Children's Art Month. There is a display from of chairs that were decorated according to the style of a famous artist.
  • There will be a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation meeting on March 23 at 7 p.m. about a hazardous waste site at 1840 Falmouth Avenue. There is also information about this issue at the reference desk.
  • The in front of the library has been operational since March 3. The library sent a letter to and for their help with the light.
  • There will be something in the newsletter about , president of the board until she passed away on Feb. 20, said Vice President Maura Rossi. She added that the board also has to decide what they will do to memorialize her.
