Keeping Cool at Clinton G. Martin Pool

The pool opened early this year and many used it in the heat wave.

The high temperature forecasted for New Hyde Park on Thursday was about 95 degrees. To those outside, it felt much warmer than that. The pool offered a chance for many to cool off; the section of the parking lot closest to the pool was filled around 2:30 p.m. and the second section began steadily filling up this afternoon.

The pool typically isn't open this early, but Facilities Supervisor Mike O'Neill and the advisory board decided in February to make the pool available from Memorial Day weekend through September 11. The thinking behind having the pool open longer was so that parents could use the pool before their children got out of school and after their children went back to school, O'Neill explained. On a hot day like Thursday, more than 50 people were in the pool at 2:45 p.m. and people were still trickling into the parking lot.
