Little Leaguers March to Nuzzi Field to Kick Off Season

Opening day cerermony at Nuzzi field in New Hyde Park.

The New Hyde Park little leaguers along with their family members and coaches marched from to Nuzzi Field on Saturday morning to kick off their season. On the newly refurbished field, Mayor Daniel Petruccio threw out the first pitch and both he and Legislator Richard Nicolello encouraged the baseball and softball players to have fun this season.

The field was decorated with banners of several of the teams that won distinctions and playoffs. Prior to the march, Nicolello and Trustee Donald Barbieri recalled their days around 1971 when they played for Rayo Oil and had a 19-1 season. Traditionally one of the first games played after the march is between the Nuzzi Oil and Rayo Oil teams.

New Hyde Park Little League President Tom Pellegrino honored the Girls Minors team which were Eastern Regional champions last year. He also encouraged parents of little leaguers to get involved with the league and become part of the board as current members have older children and will not be with the league for too much longer.
