No. 83 Become a Volunteer Firefighter in the NHPFD

The New Hyde Park Fire Department is always looking to recruit new volunteers.

There is no designated time, deadline or date to start the application process to become a part of the . The fire department is currently in the process of making a website for aspiring volunteers to apply.

To begin the process, , who has been involved with the fire department for nearly 33 years, says the trickiest part is getting a hold of one of the chiefs. Being that the department is made up of volunteers, it is hit or miss; however, on Sundays someone is usually there.  

Unlike many other fire departments, New Hyde Park does not offer a "junior program." In order to apply, you need to be 17-years-old or older, a registered resident in the and willing to pass a background check.

There are different companies within the fire department that volunteers can take part in. There are three engine companies, one ladder and one rescue company. The training period depends on the individual and how much time he or she is willing to invest in the learning process.

With more than 185 volunteer firefighters, New Hyde Park Fire Department always has their door open to residents who wish to help their community.
