New Hyde Park resident Edward Powers has been named a member of the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees by Nassau County.

A lifelong resident of New Hyde Park, Powers currently serves as the Director of Emergency Management for the Town of Hempstead. He has had a distinguished career in the private sector, working in the mutual fund industry, and has been a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department for over 30 years and is also a graduate of Nassau Community College and from Adelphi University with a degree in Business Administration and Communications.

“I consider my educational experience at Nassau second to none,” he said.

“Edward Powers brings to NCC the experience of a student, the appreciation of an alumnus, and a ‘how-to and can-do’ record that will be an enormous resource to the College as it navigates the opportunities and challenges that are on the horizon,” said NCC Acting President Dr. Ken Saunders.

Powers has received numerous certifications and credentials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Emergency Management Institute, among other organizations. He has served on the New York State Division for Women-Nassau County Advisory Council and is a member of the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce. Powers will fill the term of a former board member, which is set to expire in June 2014.

“I hope to make a constructive contribution as I join the distinguished Nassau Community College Board of Trustees,” said Powers, who in his spare time is an avid reader and writer.
