Putting Nassau On a Diet

Nassau County's Obesity rates have pushed up over a decade. How can we prevent this?

Written by Edward Robinson

The news about Nassau County's obesity rate is not good.

Obesity rates in the county are at 30.3 percent for men and 28.7 percent women in 2011, up from 22.7 percent for men 20.7 percent for women in 2001, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The  rate in New York state is also on the rise and more than one third of adults nationwide are considered obese.

So we want to know what can be done about this problem.  Government involvement, such as measures proposed by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has proven to be controversial. Do those types of proposals go too far,  or is there a happy medium?
