Time for Snow in New Hyde Park

Chance of snow is 90 percent.

We have avoided it long enough and it may finally be time to grab those shovels out of the shed and get working.

According to weather reports, the area can experience 4-6 inches of snow over the next 36 hours, so in case we do, here are some tips to keep you safe this weekend:

1. Check the MTA’s website before heading to the  For good measure, call 718-217-5477 to double check that trains are running.

3. There may not be that much snow tomorrow, but try to keep your cars off the roads until they are plowed. You'll avoid hazardous conditions, and enable snow plows to better clear the streets.

4. Do a once over of your wintry supplies and make sure things like antifreeze are securely stashed away from children and pets. Be sure to clean up any leaks as well because just a few drops of antifreeze can cause serious, irreversible illnesses in pets.

5. You promised yourself you'd get a new ice scraper for the car last year. Well, now is the time to get a new one, not in the middle of a pre-storm panic. Stock your car with storm essentials, like a blanket, jumper cables, flashlight and take a look at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's checklist for preparedness.
