Band Jazzes Up the Library

The New Hyde Park Memorial High School Jazz Band performed well-known hits at the Hillside Library.

The audience was tapping their toes as the Jazz Band livened up the typically serene atmosphere at the with some jazz favorites on Friday.

Nick Tarantola directed the band through complicated and familiar jazz pieces. Trumpet and trombone blares effortlessly fused with slinky saxophone and keyboard trills, held together with talented percussion and bass.

"See if you recognize this one," said Tarantola before the band jumped into Quincy Jones' "The Streetbeater," known to many as the theme from the show "Sanford & Son."

"This is [the jazz band's] third performance at the library," said the library's adult programs coordinator Suzanne Molczan. "The friends of the library will periodically invite music groups from the high school. We've had the jazz band, choral groups, a capella groups, flutists...They performed at our grand opening too."

The library has been one of the last performances each year for the past three years, after competitions and other performances.
