TO WALK A DAY IN HER SHOES EXHIBITION - Group Exhibit
March 8 - May 7, 2011
We have selected outstanding women from the African American community and have asked them to display their shoes as a means of introducing their personal accomplishments to museum visitors. Each shoe will be accompanied by a photograph and bio of the participant. The image will be covered by the bio and statement about the shoe.

STUDENT EXHIBIT / JURIED SHOW - Hempstead School District
May 10 - June 11, 2011
Ambitious, hardworking and inspired is how we describe the students who submitted artwork to the 2011 Juried Student Exhibition at the African American Museum. Opening Tuesday May 10 in the Small Gallery of the AAM, the show is composed of 25 pieces representing the media of photography, video, painting, drawing and mixed-media. The competition provides students with experience toward becoming professional working artists, designers and arts professionals. And it allows them to an opportunity to see how they stack up next to their peers. A reception and awards ceremony will be held Saturday May 21st from 2pm to 4pm. The show continues through June 11, 2011.

The AAM's Black Music Month Celebration Presents Our 2nd Annual Day of Jazz
June 11, 2011 .......... 12pm-6pm
The African American Museum will host a Day of Jazz. The event, appropriate for all ages, is designed to showcase local musicians and offer support for the community. Several local musicians will perform every half hour, culminating in a collective jam session at the end of the evening. Among the performers are Chuk Fowler and Norman Person.

LONG ISLAND CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

LICP is a unique organization that offers an array of photography-based programs designed to enrich our community by providing recreational outlets and cultural opportunities. Accomplished photographers, serious amateurs and beginners can develop and promote their work.

HARLEM BOOK FAIR ON LONG ISLAND - Topic: Children's Literature
September 16, 17 and 18, 2011
Please join us for Harlem Book Fair on Long Island. The annual fair includes author panel discussions and a fair with publishers, writers and literacy vendors. Celebrating black authors, one of the main highlights of the event is the award ceremony.
