Harvest Crafts at the Hillside Public Library

Young New Hyde Park residents learned how to make turkeys at the library.

On Friday Nov. 19, the held one of its weekly classes for its young New Hyde Park residents. Art with Joanne, which is one of the library's most popular classes, focuses on promoting creativity and socialization among kids. This season, instructor Joanne Manning taught her class of nearly 24 students ranging from kindergarten through seventh grade how to decorate a turkey.

The turkeys were handmade from scratch by Manning using recyclable tubing and a foam core for the body while the feet were made out of wood to support the turkey's frame.

Children who were in kindergarten through second grade were given markers and left with their imaginations to run wild. The third through seventh graders at the event were given more materials to use such as sponge paints, foil and in some cases soft metal.

Most of the children registered in the program have been a part of the library since they were babies so they are used to Art with Joanne and the environment. They often come with friends and siblings.

Manning, who has been conducting these classes throughout Long Island for over 10 years, said she "does it for the kids." Her motto is to "Do what you love and love what you do," and working with kids while encouraging them to discover their creativity and explore their imagination is what she loves to do.

There are more than 140 programs throughout the year for children to take part in, according to library director Charlene Noll. These projects are based on the seasons and holidays.

"Part of the experience of these projects is so that children can come in and develop their sense of art and sense of self," Noll said.

Some classes, such as this one, require a two dollar material fee and pre-registration is also required since the classes tend to fill up quickly.

The Hillside Public Library is located at 155 Lakeville Road. The schedule of classes and youth programs can be found on their website www.nassaulibrary.org/hillside
