Library Wraps Up a Busy Year, Comes Back for More

Programs include Beatles Revue, cooking and Chinese culture.

A record number of participants turned out for adult programs at the in 2011. And the library is planning to continue its busy schedule in the new year.

The young adults and children's programs are equally busy.

The many continuing adult programs include yoga, adult exercise, computer classes, Career Connections job club, book discussions, English conversation groups, blood pressure screenings, lectures, concerts, crafts, and tax assistance programs.

In February, the Korean Spirit and Culture Project, devoted to the history, culture and foods of Korea, also served to honor American veterans of the Korean War.

A job fair, held in cooperation with the New York State Department of Labor in March, attracted 350 jobseekers.

Holocaust survivors Inge Auerbacher and Bozenna Gilbride told of their childhood terror in concentration camps.

 The New Hyde Park Memorial Jazz Band entertained the audience in June; Nassau County’s Department of Assessment processed more than 140 applications for Senior Citizens’ Partial Property Tax Applications in two hours in October.

Actor Greg Oliver Bodine performed Poe Times 2, his one-man dramatic presentation of two Edgar Allan Poe short stories in October.

And patrons sang and danced at the Vic Vincent Group’s concert in November. 

With a grant from the Huntington Arts Council, the library will host Celebrating the Spirit of American Women.  Four programs will be presented during Women’s History Month:  actress Shirley Blanc Romaine will present Edna St. Vincent Millay:  Voice of the Jazz Age on March 13, 7pm; singer/composer Naomi Zeitlin performs a concert of  musical selections made famous by American female singers or written by female composers on Mar. 18, 1pm; storyteller Janet Emily Demarest will perform A Conversation with Abigail Adams on March 20, 7pm; and storyteller LuAnn Adams entertains folktales about Native American women, March 30, 7pm. 

Celebrating Chinese Culture will be presented on Jan, 27, at 7 pm, as a special program at the library which will also honor the memory of Patricia Ching, a longtime library employee.  George Wei of the Shen Yun organization will present a slide program about Chinese folklore, history, music and dance. 

March also marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the new library on Lakeville Road, which will feature a Beatles Revue concert on March 9, 7pm, and honor Palma Pursino, a library trustee who helped make the new library a reality. 

A special 3-session meditation series will be offered by Jenn Gonzalez on January 26, Feb. 2, 9, 7pm.  Learn to use that new e-reader on February 7, 6:45pm.  Tai Chi and Zumba will alternate Monday morning sessions through the year. Chef Barbara Sheridan offers Soup Makes the Meal on March 6, 6:45pm, and Bavani Jaroff will show off her organic/vegan cooking skills on April 10.
