Memorial Day's True Meaning

What is Memorial Day really about?

As Memorial Day approaches, I wanted to ask all of you a simple question.  What is Memorial Day really about?  Over the years, I have noticed that more and more Americans forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.  They get excited as Memorial Day approaches because it means a paid day off from work, BBQs, block parties, drinking beer by the pool with friends and the ever popular summer kick-off events.

But what is Memorial Day really about?  It’s really about remembering all those who fought and lost their lives to defend our American way of life.  They gave up their lives so we can live on as free Americans.  They sacrificed their lives and the happiness of their families so that we can enjoy our life and live on as free Americans with our families.

Memorial Day started after the American Civil War.  It was known as Decoration Day.  It was meant to honor all the fallen Union and Confederate soldiers who died in battle.  After the conclusion of World War One, the fallen of that war were also honored.  The holiday’s name was changed to Memorial Day later on in 1968 when the Federal government passed the Uniform Holidays Bill.  Remember, we honor the fallen on Memorial Day, not the living.

So on this Memorial Day, please remember to take a moment to say a prayer or a thank you to all those who gave up their lives and freedom so we can enjoy ours.  Hang Old Glory, fire up the BBQ, and responsibly enjoy the day.
