New Hyde Park to Join Town, Villages in Defense Against Superfund Suit

Mayor Petruccio addresses superfund site lawsuit and North Hempstead efforts to help.

The Village of New Hyde Park will be joining with the Town of North Hempstead and other village municipalities to defend against a lawsuit brought about by hazardous waste found at the .

In the early 1990s, the Village of New Hyde Park was one of three villages to stop dumping their waste at the site, opting not to renew and going out on their own to find an independent site where they could leave their trash.

Even though the village has stopped dumping their waste in what is now know as a toxic wasteland almost 20 years ago, they find themselves battling alongside other villages who used the same site.

“The is basically going to take on all the villages as part of the lawsuit and defends us,” Mayor Daniel Petruccio said during a meeting on Monday night at the . “Based on the conversation with our attorneys we believe this will help us cut the cost to defend ourselves and we are hoping to come in under the number the are requesting now.”

There are currently a number of companies that were pursued by New York State that are bringing legal action against more than 19 North Hempstead villages. Petruccio says these companies want New Hyde Park to pay more than $40,000 because of the waste that has accumulated on the site.

“We are hoping that will a larger number of villages and towns together we stand a better chance,” the mayor said.
