The authentic cuisine of Mexico shines in Roslyn.

Featuring a large resembling a Mexican hacienda with wooden beams and a glowing candle-light wall, Besito offers more than typical Mexican cuisine.

Yes, there are tacos and enchiladas on the menu, but there’s also Pescado Veracruzana, fish cooked in a sauce of tomatoes, sweet peppers, olives and capers, as well as Yucatan spiced chicken and soft white cow’s milk cheese from Chihuahua. Thanks to Besito, Long Islanders have the opportunity to learn about and enjoy the of Mexico from its various regions.

Besito – Mexican food is of Mayan and Aztec origin combined with the influence of the Spanish conquerors and is known for its wealth of spices and intense, deep flavoring.

Besito is deservedly well known for its guacamole, prepared tableside, in a traditional stone bowl called a molcajete, and flavored with cilantro, chiles, onions, tomato and salt ($12). Other good appetizer choices are ceviche of the day – ours was shrimp served with plantain and corn tortilla chips (market price) – and tamale de elote, a fresh tamale with shrimp cooked in chipolte chile cream ($11). A tamale is corn-based dough that is steamed or boiled in a leaf wrapper. Each day bushels of fresh corn arrive at the restaurant to be roasted and used in many of the dishes.

Enchiladas are available Swiss style with melted cheese or with and crab or shredded chicken baked in mole poblano sauce. ($18-$23). We enjoyed a pork taco cooked in banana leaves and served with Yucatan pickled onions and sweet plantains ($18). Another choice was skewers of New York strip steak with sauteed spinach and salad made from edible young cactus ($25).

At the end of the meal, diners sent home with churros (doughnuts) and two tiny worry dolls to tell all your troubles to before going to sleep.
