Biz News: 'Reel' Big Changes

Businesses making headlines nearby this week.

The former East Rockaway seafood restaurant known as The Fishery is now 'Reel Fish.'

Located at 1 Main Street, the restaurant was badly damaged in Hurricane Sandy and was purchased by new owners on May 20. The location then underwent extensive renovations totaling more than $1 million, which included a complete kitchen, electrical and plumbing overhaul, according to co-owner Shaun Manning. Click here to read the full story.

NY Sports Club Preps for Post-Sandy Return

New York Sports Clubs in Long Beach plans to reopen next month after the Hurricane Sandy-damaged gym was beset by a work stoppage in the midst of reconstruction last spring.

Frank Spano, the new general manager of the gym at 265 E. Park Ave., told Patch NYSC plans reopen the building Dec. 30. As of Wednesday, the gym’s interior floors, walls and studios were restored, but the facility remains empty. NYSC will invest more than $1 million to furnish the two-story, 20,000-square-foot building with new equipment. Click here to read the full story.

Gas Prices Drop on Long Island

Gas prices slid to $3.518 a gallon this week on Long Island, a drop of 8 cents from the same period a month ago, according tostatistics compiled by the AAA. 

The $3.518 a gallon of unleaded gasoline was considerably less than the $4.121 each gallon cost a year ago, after Sandy slammed Long Island. Click here to read the full story.

Holiday Hiring Blitz Begins on Long Island

As the holiday season nears, retail stores across Long Island are hiring for the biggest shopping time of the year.

"39 percent of retail hiring managers reported that they plan to hire seasonal workers this year" in areas like customer service, shipping and delivery, inventory management, administrative, sales, marketing, and accounting, according to a Career Builder survey. Click here to read the full story.

2013 Small Businessperson of the Year

Greg Schaefer was named the Rockville Centre Small Businessperson of the Year during the 2013 Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce Small Businessperson of the Year and Legislative Breakfast. 

Mayor Francis X. Murray and the board of trustees recognized Mr. Schafer with a proclamation for "his competent, compassionate spirit and leadership." Schafer is the CFO of Better Home Health Care Agency. Click here to read the full story.

Premier Care Center to Open in December

A Premier Care office is expected to open in Long Beach's West End
next month. 

The walk-in facility, located at a former Bank of America ATM center at 904 W. Beech St., was built during the summer and will open Dec. 15, Lauren Gandillon, director of Premier Care marketing, wrote to Patch in an email last week. Neither Premier Care nor the property owner offered additional information about the new office. A sign posted in its window indicates the center will be open seven days a week. Click here to read the full story.

West End Vacancy to Get Dose of Vitamin C

Health-conscious Long Beachers will have a new place to shop in the West End.
