Changed by 9/11: Mark Laytin, Computer Security

Mark Laytin took a new job as a result of 9/11.

On 9/11, feeling uncertain about the future, Mark Laytin ran to his bank to take out money just in case he and his wife couldn't access it again. This desire to be safe in an unsafe world helped propel Laytin to change his career.

"I'm more security conscious; more aware of my surroundings," he said. "When I drive on a bridge, I look around and I look at the other vehicles and I say, 'What would I do if I had to get out of here?'"

Laytin now works in computer security and has been for about seven years; previously he was a business consultant.

"Half of all identity theft happens online," Laytin explained. "It's very important to guard your personal information."

Laytin also thinks about things like having a meeting point for family members, having nonperishable food and a bag of necessities.
