New Hyde Park Blockbuster Closing

The entire store is on sale until moving day.

, the popular movie and video game rental store located at 900 Hillside Ave. will be going out of business shortly and is having a huge sale to clear its merchandise.

The large signs up on Blockbuster’s windows say “We’re Moving,” but no one knows where to.

Casandra, who didn't want to give her last name, from Blockbuster Headquarters said there is no guarantee where the New Hyde Park Blockbuster is going to, but there will certainly no longer be one in the area.

“A lot of stores are closing because they are not doing so well in store performance,” Cassandra said.

The closed in November and now the one in New Hyde Park is bidding farewell.

“We can’t guarantee [the store] will open in another area, but we do have Blockbuster kiosks,” Cassandra said.

The Blockbuster kiosk, called Blockbuster Express, brings you the latest movies that can no longer be found in stores and are usually located in major grocery stores and shopping centers.

Movies can be purchased for $1 by credit card at the kiosk, and must be returned the next day or you incur a late fee.

The two closest kiosks can be found inside the Garden City Park and Mineola King Kullen grocery store, both located on Jericho Turnpike.

Blockbuster, which was once a staple of weekend-movie viewing, has now fallen flat — and perhaps Netflix and On Demand programs through Verizon Fios and Optimum Online are to blame.

"We aren't getting the profits we need," Cassandra said.

In 2012 Blockbuster filed for $980 million voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy and has competed against the online download of movies and movie streaming ever since.

With the store closing, patrons can find 20 percent off candy, popcorn and treats and used games and 30 percent off previously owned DVDs. Most movies in the store are being sold for $10 each.
