New Hyde Park Housing Vacancies Quadrupled

Housing vacancies in New Hyde Park have more than quadrupled since 2000, according to the American Community Survey.

This survey uses information from the U.S. Census Bureau and in its most recent dataset, which came out on Tuesday, the survey goes through data from 2005 to 2009.

The number of housing units in New Hyde Park Village between 2005 and 2009 were 3,399. Two hundred eighty-nine, or 8.5%, of those houses were vacant. In 2000, there were 3,353 homes in the Village and 63 (1.9%) were vacant.

Some other notable points about the Village in that 2005 to 2009 data are:

• The number of people in the labor force over the age of 16 went up from 4,412 people (or 57.9% of that population) in 2000 to 4,985 (or 63.3%) from 2005 to 2009.
• The average household income rose dramatically from $61,585 in 1999 to $93,279 in 2009.
• The average value of a home in the Village doubled from $245,900 in 2000 to $508,900 between 2005 and 2009.
