Pet Store to Lease Former New Hyde Park Sleepy's Space

Canadian-based specialty pet supplier Pet Valu to open three Long Island locations.

Canadian-based specialty pet supplier Pet Valu, has signed three leases giving the retailer its first three Long Island locations, including one in New Hyde Park.

Described as the Whole Foods ofthe pet world, the retailer intends to move into the 3,100 square feet in a former Sleepy’s space in New Hyde Park Commons Shopping Center, a 14,500-square-foot center at 1596 Union Turnpike at the corner of New Hyde Park Road. The center is owned by NHP Union LLC, an affiliate of Mark Holdings LLC.

The other two locations are in South Setauket and Oyster Bay.

“People are starting to feed their pets the way they feed themselves,” Jayson Siano, managing principal of Sabre, said in a release, noting that the chain is focused on selling holistic and natural products.

The company, founded in Markham, Ontario, in 1976, has been expanding in the U.S. from Virginia to Connecticut since 1995. The stores offer more than 7,000 premium, holistic and organic pet foods, treats and supplies. The majority of th eproducts that Pet Valu offers are not sold in supermarkets or big-box pet stores. The stores do not sell pets.

Owned by the Atlanta-based private equity firm Roark Capital Group, Pet Value operates more than 400 stores throughout North America.
