Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) riders may have to look elsewhere for parking as the MTA begins modernizing the Merillon Avenue commuter parking lot on the north side of the station in Garden City Park on Monday.

The rehabilitation project will temporarily close off access to approximately 50 parking spaces. On June 17, the eastern half of the parking lot will be closed for approximately two weeks while contractors rehabilitate the lot including repaving, striping, new curbs, better drainage, new guardrails and improved signage. The western half of the lot will then be closed for the same work.

The finished lot will re-open July 17.

"The railroad regrets this inconvenience, but is carrying out the project in two parts in order to impact as few customers as possible," according to an MTA release.

The MTA advises that alternate parking may be found at the Mineola Intermodal Center located on the south side of the Mineola station. No residency requirements or permits are needed at the Mineola Intermodal Center, where parking costs $6 per day.

The Merillon Ave. Station work is one of three LIRR-owned parking lots scheduled for rehabilitation this summer at a total cost of $421,000. The others are at Lawrence and Laurelton.
