Nassau County Winter Storm Watch Doesn't Mean Closed NHP Schools, Yet

Check New Hyde Park Patch for updates about school closings and canceled activities due to the potential snowfall later this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a for Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon.

Nassau County could get blasted with between six and 12 inches of snow, along with winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour, according to weather service officials.

"There is going to be some heavy, heavy bands of snow," said Marcie Katcher, a spokeswoman at the weather service's Bohemia office.

Snowfall is expected to be the heaviest late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, Katcher said.

According to the National Weather Service's seven-day outlook for Southern Nassau, snow will primarily be falling after midnight on Tuesday night. There will be a heavy snow accumulation, the forecast says, with a 90% chance of snow. Wednesday's chance of snow is 80%, the forecast says.

Both the and have not decided to close their doors yet although spokeswomen for both asked that people check back in closer to the storm. But ' student council meeting on Wednesday was cancelled "due to the forecast of inclement weather," according to an email alert.
