FINE ART COUTURE FEATURED AT DESIGN WARS AN ALLIANCE WITH NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE OCTOBER 11 AT ROOSEVELT FIELD

Fashion and fine art will come together in a dynamic and entertaining way when Roosevelt Field hosts Design Wars, an interactive competition between Nassau Community College’s fashion design students, on Friday, October 11 at 1 p.m. The event is a prelude to Simon Fashion Now®, a two-day free, celebration of style, presented locally by Winthrop-University Hospital Breast Health Center.

In celebration of the arts on Long Island, eight students enrolled in Nassau Community College’s Fashion Design Program have been paired up with a young woman ages 16 to 21, a Scholar-Artist Award Honoree with Long Island Arts Alliance. Designers are challenged with creating a custom evening gown or cocktail look inspired by pieces/collections by famed artists such as Jackson Pollack, Edouard Manet, Erté, Pablo Piccaso and Piet Mondrian for their model, each of whom has an interest in the performing arts.

Since beginning of September, under the guidance of Nassau Community College Professors Sharyne Wolfe and Rona Casciola, each student has been hard at work sketching designs and drafting a pattern for their “client”. As part of the challenge, they will construct the garment while staying on a budget of $125 for materials provided by Roosevelt Field.

At 1 p.m. on October 11, the designs will be revealed for the first time and modeled on the Simon Fashion Now runway by the incredible young women who helped inspire the looks. On-air radio personality Steve Harper from K98.3 will serve as event emcee and the designs will be judged by a distinguished panel including Roosevelt Field’s Style Setter Vera Sweeney; Life is Sweet TV on-air talent Stacey Sweet; Bloomingdale’s PR Manager David Kirchenbaum; and jcpenney Store Leader Kay Moini.

The winning student will receive a $500 Simon Giftcard®, with a runner-up receiving a $250 Simon Giftcard®, exposure to the masses via Roosevelt Field’s Simon Fashion Now runway, announcement of their name on  Roosevelt Field’s Facebook and Twitter pages and a real-life experience to take on their career path. Shoppers are encouraged to be front and center and cheer on the students and models in the North Court.

“Nassau Community College’s design students have consistently risen to the challenge each year we’ve hosted Design Wars and we are thrilled to extend this opportunity to this talented group, once again,” commented Maria DiLeo, director of marketing for Roosevelt Field. “If the past is any indication, shoppers at Roosevelt Field are in for a treat when the students reveal their unique art-inspired looks.”

“The Design Wars program has been a win-win for our students, as it gives them a chance to add career-benefiting experience to their resumes and showcase their talent to the extensive audience at Roosevelt Field,” commented Professor Wolfe. “Participating in Design Wars is a tremendous experience for these talented individuals and one that will benefit them as they embark on their chosen career path.”

Following Design Wars, Simon Fashion Now continues at Roosevelt Field with Trends & Friends Night, which will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The free evening will include show-stopping presentations of fall’s hottest looks, product displays, demonstrations, interactive beauty and style consultations and light bites from Roosevelt Field retailers.

Trends & Friends Night runway fashion shows will take place at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. During Trends & Friends Night, guests can participate in fundraising elements to benefit Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA), a collegial network of the region’s not-for-profit arts and arts education organizations, promoting awareness of and participation in Long Island's world-class arts and cultural institutions.

New this year, Simon Fashion Now at Roosevelt Field will partner with SAME SKY, a fair-trade initiative that offers employment to women living with HIV/AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa. Trained as artisans, SAME SKY women earn 15 to 20 times the average wage to hand-crochet beautiful glass bead jewelry. One hundred percent of all net-proceeds from the sale of SAME SKY jewelry directly affect the lives of Rwanda genocide survivors. Roosevelt Field will host a trunk show featuring SAME SKY jewelry on Friday, October 11 during Trends & Friends Night, in conjunction with Simon Fashion Now.

All Trends & Friends Night activities are open to the public and free of charge.
