Free Cancer Screenings for Women at LIJ Medical Center

LIJ Teams Up with American Cancer Society to Offer Free Mammograms.

Screening tests increase the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be curable. And, studies show that people who don’t have health insurance or are underinsured are less likely to get screened for cancer and more likely to be diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease. That’s why LIJ Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care Unit will offer several free cancers screening services to women without health insurance on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

LIJ has teamed up with the American Cancer Society to offer free mammograms to women in the community and across the New York metropolitan area. Clinicians at LIJ will offer clinical breast exams, mammograms (given at the Diagnostic Imaging Center at the Center for Advanced Medicine, 450 Lakeville Rd, located across the street from the hospital), pelvic exams, pap smears and colon cancer screenings. Women eligible for the screenings must be between the ages of 40 and 64 and do not have health insurance. Mammograms must have been taken over a year ago and will be provided at little or no cost to women.
