North Hempstead 2013 Memorial Day Weekend Guide

Events and information you need for the holiday weekend.

It's a day to pause remember those who gave their lives in defense of our country and for many it's also the unofficial start of the summer season. Despite an ominous weather forecast there's plenty of events on tap. Here's a guide to make the most of the weekend.

Saturday Parade:

New Hyde Park: The annual parade will be held in the village on Saturday, May 25, beginning at 10 a.m. at Hillside Boulevard, marching east along Jericho Turnpike to the village hall where a small ceremony will take place and the parade will then march north on New Hyde Park Road toward Memorial Park where it will conclude with a ceremony at the monument in the park.

Monday Parades:

Great Neck: The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Schenk Avenue and Middle Neck Road, near the Long Island Rail Road station. The parade will make its way north on Middle Neck Road before concluding at the Village Green in the Old Village. This year’s parade marks the third consecutive year with participation of The Royal Canadian Legion, Ontario Branch #50. Following the parade, a remembrance service and wreath dedication will take place at Great Neck's newly renovated veterans memorial on the Village Green.

Garden City Park: Garden City Park will be holding their parade on Monday, May 27 on Denton Avenue and Jericho Turnpike at 9 a.m. Sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 120, the parade will head east on Jericho Turnpike before turning north on Nassau Boulevard and then west on Fourth Street toward the Garden City Park School on Central Avenue before continuing toward the VFW headquarters on Jericho Turnpike.

Port Washington: 
The Port Washington Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 p.m. on Port Washington Boulevard before continuing down Main St. to the John Philip Sousa Memorial Bandshell in Sunset Park.

Mineola: The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. at Wilson Field down by the pool and goes along Westbury Avenue to Roslyn Road, Roslyn Road to Jericho, Jericho over to Marcellus and down Marcellus and ending at the park where there will be a ceremony honoring, memorializing our veterans. 

Other Commemorations: The Town of North Hempstead will host the annual Memorial Day Commemoration and Fireworks Extravaganza on Saturday, May 25 at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. The United States Marine Corps Color Guard, Nassau County Police Pipe Band, and the Volunteers of America firing detail will be present to commemorate our fallen soldiers. Live beachfront concerts will feature performances by the Classic Rock tribute band Minute By Minute, and high energy band Mack and Soul. The park will open at 3pm and the ceremony will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. For more information please call 311 or visit www.northhempsteadny.gov. Government Offices: Memorial Day is a federal state and local holiday. Government offices will be closed Monday, including Town Hall. There will be no mail delivery Monday.

LIRR: On Friday afternoon the Long Island Rail Road will add extra trains headed east on the Port Jefferson, Babylon, Port Washington Far Rockaway Montauk and Ronkonkoma Branches. The Rail Road will operate on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day. Get your train schedule here.

Beaches and ParksAll state arks including Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Bethpage State Park will be open, although there may be some reduced parking and repair work at some parks. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage will be closed.
