Lake Success Nonprofit is Semifinalist for Excellence Awards

Metro New York Make-A-Wish chapter one of 10 nonprofits highlighted for practices.

The Lake Success-based chapter of the Metro New York Make-A-Wish Foundation was recently chosen as one of 10 semifinalists for the 2013 New York Community Trust-New York Magazine Nonprofit Excellence Awards.

The organization grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Each of the semifinalists were judged in areas ranging from their focus on results management practices to financial management. The awards showcase organizations with best practices that can help other nonprofits.

“We are thrilled that Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the 2013 New York Community Trust-New York Magazine Nonprofit Excellence Awards,” president and CEO Pat Clemency said in a statement. “We take our stewardship responsibilities very seriously and appreciate the opportunity this application process gives us to assess and improve our management structure, accountability and results for the benefit of the wish children and families we serve.”

The awards are based on eight areas of nonprofit management: focus on results, governance structure, financial management, human resources, diversity and responsiveness, IT practices, communications, fundraising and resource development.

In the fall, three of the semifinalists will be selected as winners of the Nonprofit Excellence Awards, and will receive cash awards of $30,000, $20,000 and $10,000, respectively. They will also be recognized in New York Magazine and by WNYC, and will receive tuition scholarships for the Programs in Social Enterprise in Executive Education at Columbia Business School.
