North Hempstead Back in the Country Club Business

The Town is two weeks away from signing a contract to purchase the Roslyn Country Club.

There was a meeting of the Roslyn Country Club Civic Association held at Wheatley High School earlier this week.

was a guest speaker. It was announced that the has made a deal with the owner of the property and they plan on sub-dividing the property with the Town buying approximately eight acres containing the pool & tennis courts and the owner retaining the 2-1/2 acres which includes the catering facility.

Based on reports from people who were in attendance at this meeting (my invitation must have been lost in the mail), the Town will pay $2 million with the money coming from a grant to acquire open land. The net cost to the Town will be $0. The Town projects the cost of $8 to $10 million to re-build the facility and expects to attract approximately 1000 families at $1,000 dues per year.

The main concern amongst attendees was how the Town was going to monitor membership, not what happens if 1000 families don't join. How many of us can afford $1,000 a year for a pool and covered tennis courts?

Of course, there is the matter of the residents and their ownership of the right to use the pool... I wonder what type of deal will be struck and what the remuneration will be. Ultimately, it will be a Town expense.

The town claims to be about 10 days to 2 weeks away from signing the contract.
