May Fischer, 95, Great-Grandmother

Former New Hyde Park resident passed away on Dec. 4, 2013.

May Fischer passed away on peacefully in Fairfield, CT on Wednesday Dec. 4, 2013 at the age of 95. She was born on Nov. 29, 1918 in Kiderminster, England and emigrated with her family to Queens, New York in 1929 at the height of the depression.

Although her mother never warmed up to New York, May, along with her brother Ken and sisters Josephine and Jean, quickly made friends and discovered the excitement of her new home. In her late teens she worked as a waitress at the 1939 World's Fair and then went to work at Childs Restaurant on 42nd street where she met her boss, the man she would marry, Bob Fischer.

May and Bob raised six children (Barbara, Cathy, Bruce, Conrad, Mark and Mary Elizabeth) in the many places they called home over the years like Queens, NY, Biloxi, MS, Phoenix, AZ, New Hyde Park, NY, Syosset, NY and Woodbury, CT. She also spent many hours and days perfecting her gardens no matter where she lived. She had an artistic flair and throughout her life created many works of art for both family and charities.Her family was her first love. May lost Bob in 2000 but is survived by and lives on in her six children, 20 grand children and 28 great grand children.

Services were held December 14 at St. Stephen Parish, in Trumbull, CT. Donations may be made in May's name to the St. Jude Children's Hospital fund at tg.stjude.org.
