Russell Harrison, 91, Navy Welder

Former New Hyde Park resident passed away on Jan. 6, 2014.

Russell Harrison of Buchanan, NY passed away on Jan. 6, 2014. He was 91 years old. He was born on July 21, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA to Thomas and Irene Harrison. 

Russell was a welder for Local No. 5 in New Hyde Park, NY. He proudly served his country after the Pearl Harbor attack, joining the US Navy as a Seabee welder, raising ships that had been attacked. He often visited local grammer schools to talk about what it meant to be a veteran.

Russell was a show man who loved to sing and dance and was an advid sports fan. He enjoyed baseball, football, little league baseball and especially NASCAR races; he wanted to be a driver in his youth. He was a member of the Town of Cortlandt and Buchanan Seniors, Organizer of the Buchanan Veterans, 50 year member of Courtlandt Lodge #34 F& AM, Past Commander of VFW Post in NJ, Life Member of the Elks Lodge, member of the Cooties and Recipient of a Hall of Fame Citation from Senator Greg Ball. 

He was predeceased by his wife Faye in October of 2013. He is survived by his daughter Bonnie Harrison, step-son, Ronald (Dolly) Lancaster, grandchildren, Jimmy, Joy Heather and step-granddaughter, Barbara.

A memorial service will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at the Cortlandt Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.
