“Airborne” Car Crash Closes New Hyde Park Road

SUV collides with telephone pole on New Hyde Park Road during rush hour.

Rush-hour traffic briefly had to be routed away from New Hyde Park Tuesday afternoon when a Jeep SUV collided into a telephone pole at 70 New Hyde Park Road.

and personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the accident was reported at 5:15 p.m., aiding the driver, who was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment according to police, but is otherwise stable. The exact nature of any injuries sustained is unknown.

According to police at the scene, the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on New Hyde Park Road when it hit the small incline at the train tracks and became airborne. When it landed, the car caused a gouge in the street and lost control before skidding and crashing into the pole.

The crash caused wires to become downed on the roadway but were also cleared by emergency service personnel.

Police had cleared the wreck to the side of the roadway at about 5:38 p.m.
