Brooklyn Men Arrested on Charges of Shooting Nassau Officer

Police arrest two men on charges of burglary and attempted murder of police officer.

A pair of Brooklyn men were arrested and charged with a burglary and shooting of a police officer in New Hyde Park that occurred Wednesday morning at about 1:54 a.m.

According to detectives, home owners of a residence on Campbell Street called 911 stating they heard odd noises in their home. Cong Xu, 21, and Renhang Qui, 22, both of Brooklyn fled the home and were confronted by police officers. As Xu ran away from the officers, he turned and fired several rounds from a handgun. One bullet struck Police Officer Mohit Arora in the lower abdomen.

As Xu continues to run, he allegedly menaced other officers with his gun.  Officers located Xu, taking him into custody on Flower Lane and Nugent Street.

Qui was taken into custody on Lakeville Road and Sylvia Lane.

Officer Arora was transported and admitted to North Shore Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Xu was later transported and admitted to the Nassau County Medical Center for an injury to his ear.

Xu and Qui are both charged with first degree burglary, first degree attempted robbery and second degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Xu is also charged with first degree attempted murder of a police officer. Qui will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead. Xu will be arraigned as soon as medically practical.
