Chief Willers: Stay Indoors During Hurricane Irene

The NHPFD Fire Chief wants residents to stay safe during the storm.

"I don't want people to get hurt by flying debris or stuck in floods," he said.

One area that is prone to flooding is on Hillside Avenue between Lakeville Road and New Hyde Park Road, Willers said. During the hail storm, this area was "impassable," he said.

If winds reach over 50 miles per hour during Hurricane Irene, the New Hyde Park Fire Department will not be able to respond to certain non-emergency calls because it would be dangerous for the firefighters, Willers said.

Firefighters will be on standby starting at about 6 p.m.

"If it's not a true emergency, don't tie up the lines," Willers said.
