Maxwell Sherman, the 18-year-old Long Beach man charged with strangling and killing a teen girl, told a news reporter the day before his arrest that he was “amazed” and “surprised” by her death.

Police arrested Sherman on Saturday after Lauren Daverin, 18, of Lynbrook was found dead — beaten and stripped naked except for her boots, with her clothes nearby — on a footbridge in Rockville Centre on Thursday night, and charged him with second-degree murder, according to The Daily Mail.

On Friday, Sherman told a CBS news reporter near the crime scene that he had seen Daverin on the night she died “for like five minutes,” he said, adding that it was around 7 p.m. and he was riding by on his bike where a group of teens had gathered and he grubbed a cigarette from his friend, Steve.

Nilson Lagos Rivera, 19, was at his home on 3rd Street early Saturday when he became involved in a heated verbal argument with his friend over a bicycle pad lock key, Nassau Police said.

The two men locked their bicycles together on a nearby street earlier in the evening, and the defendant wanted the key from the 28-year-old victim.

Before the victim could respond, the defendant picked up a kitchen knife from the counter and began slashing the victim with it. Rivera took the victim’s keys and ran off, police said.

The victim was treated and released from a local hospital, according to police.

Police arrested Rivera later Saturday and charged him with first-degree robbery.

Police Stop Drunken Boater

A Garden City man was arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated Saturday night in Glenwood Landing, Nassau Police said.

Marine units were on routine patrol when they saw a 1999 Pro-Line boat operating without its navigational lights, traveling south in Hempstead Harbor off the waters of Harry Tappen Beach.

After the boat was stopped, cops said that Nikolaos Katrakazos, 23, of Garden City, had watery, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. He was arrested without incident, police added. The vessel was released to an occupant of the boat who was not intoxicated.

Katrakazos has been charged with boating while intoxicated, operating an unregistered vessel, navigation lights not displayed, improper display of validating stickers and no distress flag or flares.
