Crimes Nearby: 13-Year Old Arrested, Jewelry Heist, Extortion

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions. 

Roslyn Heights
A car accident occurred on the eastbound side of the Long Island Expressway between exits 36 and 37 on May 16 at 3:09 p.m. with a fluid spill reported at the location.

Westbury
A robbery occurred on May 16 at 9:30 p.m. when a 21-year old male employee of Dominos Pizza attempted to deliver a pizza to 156 Rushmore St. When he arrived he was motioned to walk over to a black male in his twenties, thin build wearing a black long sleeved shirt that was in the street. As he approached a second male black suspect in his twenties with a thin build came out of the bushes and pointed a gun at the victim. The first suspect went through the victim’s pockets removing an unknown amount of cash. They told the victim to run back to his car and fled in an unknown direction. No injuries were reported. Police ask anyone with information about the above listed crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.

A Westbury man was arrested and charged with robbery on May 17 at 8:20 p.m. According to detectives, a 57-year old male victim and Jose W. Arevalo, 35, exited a bus at Maple Avenue and Post Avenue. Arevalo, who is known to the victim, pushed him to the ground and forcibly removed an undetermined amount of money from his pocket. He then fled the scene on foot. Third Precinct Officers, along with Bureau of Special Operations Officers were able to locate Arevalo as he entered his home. He was placed under arrest without incident, at which time a bag containing what is believed to be cocaine was recovered from his residence. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries to his hands. Arevalo is charged with second-degree robbery, seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and violation of probation. He was arraigned on May 18 at First District Court in Hempstead.

A car accident occurred near the intersection of the Wantagh State Parkway & Northern State in westbury on May 18 at 4:34 p.m.

Hicksville
A gas line was struck by construction equipment at 6 Cedar St. on May 14 at 12:17 p.m. The leak was shut down by the Hicksville Fire Department.

A fire broke out at 5 Lawn Place on May 14 at 12:28 p.m.

Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department are seeking the public’s help in identifying three unknown subjects in connection with a grand larceny which occurred on March 13, at about 7:06 p.m. at Ailin Jewelry Inc. at 358 Broadway Mall. While present in the store the subjects acting together to steal assorted gold jewelry valued at approximately $70,000. The subjects fled the scene south bound towards Macy’s department store.

Garden City
Garden City detectives arrested a male 18-year-old from Brooklyn on May 8 for duping an Adelphi student to give personal information in March of this year, which was then used to withdraw $1,200 from her bank account.

A 54-year-old man and a female 34-year-old, both from Brooklyn were arrested on May 9 for attempting to extort $6,000 from a Whitestone male at his Garden City place of business by threatening to go public with a false claim against him. A 21-year-old from Manhasset man was arrested on May 12 for DWI (drugs), aggravated unlicensed operation first degree due to a prior DWI Incident and aggravated unlicensed operation 2nd degree due to three open license suspensions.

West Hempstead
A 13-year-old boy from West Hempstead was the second juvenile arrested in connection with a robbery that occurred at the Rockville Centre Train Station last week.   The arrest was made Wednesday, one day after Nassau County Police arrested a 15-year-old boy from Rockville Centre as the first suspect in the crime.
