Crimes Nearby: Arson, Bomb Scare and Sexual Abuse

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Mineola

The New York State Supreme Courthouse in Mineola was evacuated Tuesday morning after a bomb threat had been received by telephone according to official reports.

A fire occurred at 801 Roman Ave. on January 12 at 9:25 p.m.

Nassau County Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying unknown subject(s) in connection with an arson. On Monday, January 6, at approximately 2:30 a.m., an unknown subject(s) poured gasoline on the front door of a residential home located on Circle Drive, Westbury, set it on fire and fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim was able to extinguish the fire without injury. Crime Stoppers is asking anyone who can identify the subject(s), or with any information about this crime to call 1-800-244-TIPS (8477).

Jericho

A car accident occurred on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway near exit 40 on January 11 at 5:38 p.m.

Hicksville

Police are investigating a sexual abuse report that occurred in Hicksville on Monday, January 6 at 7:03 p.m. According to detectives, an unknown white male  described as 40 to 50 years old, approximately 5’09” tall, 200 to 215 lbs., with a shaved head and beard, wearing a long sleeve tan colored tee shirt and blue jeans entered the Red Bell Spa at 107 Newbridge Road and asked for a massage. The subject was instructed to respond to a room, undress and lie on a table covering himself with a blanket. When the female victim (age unknown) entered the room the subject was completely exposed. He eventually lay down on the table and the victim covered him with a sheet. The massage began and the subject grabbed the victim’s right arm in an attempt to have her touch him in a sexual manner. The victim backed away from the table and the subject became agitated. The subject got off the table and backed the victim into a corner where a struggle ensued. He then touched her in an inappropriate sexual manner. The victim was able to leave the room and notify police. The subject then fled the scene by unknown means. No injuries were reported. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City

On January 5 Officers responded to Nassau Boulevard where a tractor trailer struck the overpass. There was no apparent damage to the bridge. The roof of the trailer sustained damage. The driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old man from Connecticut, was cited for disregarding bridge clearance signs.

On January 8 at 6:20 p.m., the Garden City police and fire departments responded to the Cherry Valley Apartments to contain and safeguard a hazardous material spill. The spill consisted of 100 gallons of recently delivered home heating oil that spilled into the building’s boiler room. The Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Department of Environmental Conservation also responded to the scene. The heat was turned off to the affected building. Approximately five hours later, the scene was cleared and heat was restored to the building.

On January 11 officers stopped a vehicle for aggressive driving violations on Clinton Road and Meadow Street. The driver, a 24-year-old from Mineola, was arrested for DWI (.15 percent blood alcohol content), unsafe turn, two lane violations, unlicensed operation and uninsured operation.

West Hempstead

Sometime between 11 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 2 p.m. on Jan. 12, a victim reports unknown subject(s) removed property from his unlocked vehicle while it was parked on Adams Ave.

Sometime between 11 p.m. on Jan. 14 and 7 a.m. on Jan. 15, victim reports unknown subject(s) removed property from his vehicle while it was parked on Colony St.

On Jan. 15 at 1:50 a.m., Estreberto B. Velasquez, of West Hempstead, was arrested for DWI on Eagle Ave. and Woodfield Rd.

A West Hempstead man was arrested Thursday on dogfighting charges involving eight pit bull dogs "housed in cages" with "bite wounds" and "scarring from previous wounds," according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office.
