Crimes Nearby: Burglary Bank Robbery and DWI

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Roslyn
A bank robbery occurred on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 5:50 p.m. in Roslyn. According to detectives, a white male subject, 5’8”-5’10” tall, wearing all dark clothing, a black hat, glasses, fake wig and beard, entered the Citibank at 1075 Northern Blvd. The subject produced what appeared to be a shotgun, and verbally announced a robbery to the employees. He fled on foot with an unknown amount of proceeds. No direction of travel was observed. There were five employees in the bank during the incident. No injuries were reported. Detectives request anyone with information pertaining to the above crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Carle Place
A car accident closed Old Country Road and Zeckendorf Boulevard on June 11 at about 11:46 p.m. According to detectives, while crossing Old Country Road just east of Zeckendorf Boulevard on foot from the south side to the north side, a 28 year old male from Potomac, Maryland was struck by an eastbound 2010 Toyota that was driven by a 55-year old male from Bethpage. As a result of the accident the pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with multiple traumas and was listed in serious but stable condition. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured and a brake test on his vehicle was performed at the scene. There was no criminality involved in this accident. The roads were reopened at about 2:05 a.m.

Hicksville
A Westbury man was arrested for aggravated driving while intoxicated that occurred on June 9, 2013 at 1:05 a.m. According to police, Cirilo Francisco-Diaz, 49, was observed by police operating a gray 2007 Honda westbound on West Old Country Road, Hicksville at a high rate of speed and failing to maintain lanes. A vehicle stopped was conducted and a 10-year old boy was observed sitting in the front passenger seat. Francisco-Diaz was placed under arrest without incident. The child was released to a family friend. Francisco-Diaz is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned on June 9, 2013 at First District Court in Hempstead.

A Westbury man was arrested for a robbery that occurred in Hicksville on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 1:15 p.m. According to detectives, after quitting his job at Target Department Store located at 2003 Broadway Mall Keddy Oliver, 17, approached a 34 year old husband and 24 year old wife along with their two children who were waiting for a ride outside the store. The defendant then pushed and demanded money from the victims while pointing his hand in the shape of a gun to the husband and children. The wife fearing for her family’s safety handed over an undetermined amount of US currency. Keddy Oliver then fled on foot in an unknown direction. Second Precinct Police Officers were able to locate the defendant shortly after on nearby Nevada Street and placed him under arrest. There were no injuries reported. Oliver was charged with two counts third degree robbery and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned on Monday, June 10, 2013 at First District Court in Hempstead.

A four-car accident occurred at South Broadway and Fourth Street in front of a Taco Bell on June 11 at 3:55 p.m. There were seven people reportedly aided.

A fire occurred in the walls of the Subway restaurant at the Broadway Mall in the second floor food court on June 13 at about 2:25 p.m. It was placed under control at about 2:46 p.m.

Floral Park
An Elmont man was arrested for burglary that occurred between May 24, 2013 and June 9, 2013 in Floral Park. According to detectives, at 1:17 a.m. police responded to a burglary in progress at 53 Covert Ave. Upon arrival officers observed a male subject lifting the rear window of the address. The burglar then saw police and fled the scene on foot. Officers pursued the subject through backyards and in front of 32 Beverly Avenue, were able to apprehend and placed under arrest Carlos Morales, 26. After an investigation it was determined that the defendant had also committed burglaries at the following:
  • May 25, 2013 and June 2, 2013 - Body Works Day Spa located at 57 Covert Ave.  Proceeds were an undetermined amount of US currency and jewelry.
  • May 31, 2013 – Benny and Mike’s Barber Shop located at 53 Covert Ave.  Proceeds were an undetermined amount of US currency.
  • June 2, 2013 - Park Place Restaurant located at 41 Covert Ave. Proceeds were a bottle of champagne, US currency and a pair of pants.

Morales is being charged with 5 counts of third degree burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was arraigned on June 9 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Garden City

Officers conducted traffic enforcement on Stewart Avenue on June 5 when he cited a male 35-year-old from Sayville for speeding at Wellington Avenue (45 mph), driving with three license suspensions and uninsured operation. The subject’s vehicle was also impounded. Another operator was cited for speeding in a school zone (70 mph in a 20-mph zone) in front of Garden City Middle School.

A joint investigation between the Garden City Police Department and the Adelphi University Public Safety Department resulted in the arrest of a male 24-year-old from Astoria for two counts of burglary, possession of a weapon (brass Knuckles) and burglary tools on June 5. The subject had entered two different buildings on the campus and removed four flushometers. Further investigation revealed that this subject may be responsible for numerous similar thefts on college campuses throughout Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties.
