Crimes Nearby: Child Porn Sentencing, Forged Prescriptions and Burglary Arrests

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

A Mineola man was sentenced to 7 years for possessing and trading online what is described to be graphic child pornography with victims ranging in age from infant to 8 years old. Michael Hopkins, 25, is also facing rape charges for allegedly having sex with a 14 year old girl. Even more disturbing is that he is a former monitor at the Half Hallow Hills School District and his mother runs a daycare facility out of their Mineola home.

Floral Park

A motor vehicle accident reportedly resulted in a pinned victim at about 8:04 a.m. on February 3. The Floral Park Fire Department, emergency services unit and Nassau County Police responded to the scene on Jericho Turnpike and Plainfield Avenue for the extraction.

Westbury

A fire broke out on February 2 at 623 Powells Lane at about 8:05 p.m. The fire was in a private dwelling. Extra coverage was provided by the Jericho, Carle Place and Hicksville Fire Departments. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Two Hempstead men, one 22 and the other 25, were arrested on January 29 after reports they were shining flashlights The 25-year-old was wanted for larcenies that occurred on Jan. 26 and Jan. 28 at Lord & Taylor where he stole more than $500 in merchandise on each date. It was also determined that the subject was wanted for an assault and criminal mischief that occurred in Hempstead on Dec. 17, 2011. The 22-year-old was arrested for an outstanding Hempstead village traffic warrant.

Nassau County Police's Vice Squad conducted an investigation of Acupuncture Oriental Body Work located on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead. It led to the arrests of Shuli Sun, of Hicksville, and Meiqin Shen, of Flushing, on Jan. 25, and four summonses were issued by the Town of Hempstead Building Department.

Nassau County Police's POP Unit conducted investigations at two businesses on January 25, arresting two individuals whom police say sold alcoholic beverages to underage patrons.

Valley Stream

Three men have been arrested after they presented forged prescriptions to a CVS pharmacy in Valley Stream and Lynbrook last Friday, according to police.

Detectives said that Kwame Lake, 19, of Hempstead, presented a forged prescription at the CVS Pharmacy located at 44 N. Central Ave. in Valley Stream, calling for Promethazine with Codeine. Subsequent to investigation, the vehicle which was operated by the defendant was located with occupants Kason Parker, 21, and Marlon Douglas, 21, both of Hempstead.

The vehicle description had been provided by the Lynbrook Police Department following an investigation of a forged prescription which had been presented to the CVS in Lynbrook, by a male operating the vehicle at the drive thru, police said. Search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 10 blank prescriptions belonging to an unnamed doctor, three forged prescriptions written for Promethazine with Codeine and five bottles containing more than two ounces of Promethazine with Codeine, a narcotic preparation. Lake, Parker and Douglas are each being charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Lake is being charged with an additional count of second-degree possession of a forged instrument.

Glen Cove

A Glen Cove man has been sentenced to the maximum 2 1/3 to 7 years for the crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old motorcyclist.

, 37, was convicted by a jury last October of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and misdemeanor counts of driving while ability impaired by a combination of drugs and alcohol, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said that about 2:30 a.m. on May 1, 2010, Uribe was driving his Nissan SUV north on Glen Cove Road when he crashed into a tree at the corner of Midwood Cross in East Hills. A taxi and a motorcycle driving north on Glen Cove Road crashed into Uribe’s SUV.

The motorcyclist, Pietro Gaudesi of Glen Head, was thrown from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The taxi driver and one his passengers, as well as Uribe, suffered minor injuries.

Port Washington

After being involved in a domestic incident, a Port Washington man was placed under arrest on Charles Avenue on January 20 at 11:35 p.m.

A Port Washington man was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, assault, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana at Webster Avenue On January 22 at 8:34 p.m.
