Crimes Nearby: Credit Card Skimming, Bank Robbery and Stolen Cooking Oil

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

Police closed the right lane of the Northern State Parkway on May 27 at 7:23 p.m.  as the result of a car crashing into a tree with the tree down.

One person was reported trapped in a motor vehicle accident at 350 Old Courthouse Road on May 31 at 7:06 p.m.

A newborn was treated for smoke inhalation at 60 Croyden Road on Friday, June 1.

Carle Place

Police were involved in a pursuit of a vehicle wanted for a robber along the Meadowbrook Parkway on May 29 at 3:41 p.m.

A car fire was reported on 223 Glen Cove Road on June 1 at 8:26 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene with a fully involved car fire. 

Westbury

A Baldwin woman was arrested for allegedly skimming credit cards that customers used to pay their checks while working at the Houlihans restaurant at 725 Merrick Ave. on May 14 at 8 p.m. Gabriella Melendez, 24, is being charged with third degree grand larceny, two counts of using a forged instrument and two counts of first and second degree grand larceny for allegedly using the stolen numbers to purchase $3,100 worth of merchandise from stores throughout the county. She was arraigned on May 31 in First District Court in Hempstead.

A male black in his late 20’s, reportedly robbed the TD Bank on June 1 located at 6060 Brush Hollow Road. He is described as 5’ 8” with a thin build wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, a dark tie and a New York Yankees baseball hat. According to detectives, the man approached a teller and demanded cash. The teller complied and the suspect fled southbound through the parking lot on Brush Hollow Road with an undetermined amount of assorted U.S. currency.  Nine employees and one patron were in the bank at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Hicksville

A motor vehicle accident occurred on West John Street and Charlotte Avenue on May 25 at 2:22 p.m. One person was aided and transported to a nearby hospital.

The Hicksville Fire Department requested a hazmat team at 172 Second St. on May 27 at 6:15 p.m. for a leaking propane tank. 

A Nassau County Police morotcycle and apparatus was  on Stewart Avenue and New Hyde Park Road on June 1 at about 12:25 p.m.

As part of the nationwide "Click it or Ticket" campaign on May 24, officers conducted a passenger safety checkpoint on Clinton Road, which resulted in the issuance of 33 tickets, 26 of which were for seatbelt and occupant safety violations.

Officers responded to the rear of Citibank on Franklin Avenue. It was determined that a Medford man, 35, had parked his vehicle in a handicap space with the engine running and entered the bank. The vehicle then jumped a curb, striking and damaging bushes, a handicap walk handrail and a light pole. The driver then left the scene. As a result of Officer Reilly’s investigation, the subject was located at a local towing yard and was cited for leaving the scene of an accident, leaving a vehicle unattended and parking in a handicap space without a permit.

An unknown person cut the lock to Frankly Thai restaurant in Franklin Square on May 23 and stole two drums of cooking oil.

An unknown person removed items from an unlocked vehicle that had been parked on Hoffman Street in Franklin Square between May 24 and May 25.

Two Lakeview homes, one located on Mary Ann Lane and another on Nightingale Road, were burglarized between May 24 and May 25.

A home on Langdon Boulevard in Lakeview was burglarized on May 28.
