Crimes Nearby: Fatal Car Accident, Jewel Robbery and DWIs

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions. 

Garden City Park

An overturned car was reported at Jericho Turnpike and Marcus Avenue on November 21 at 4:12 p.m. There were no serious injuries reported.

Mineola

Two elderly pedestrians were struck by an SUV which was backing out in a parking lot on November 21 at 2:45 p.m. They were taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Manhasset

A car accident occurred at 188 East Shore Road on November 21 at 11:22 a.m. with an entrapment reported.

Westbury

A hazmat incident involving Freon leaking from a refer occurred at 617 Jefferson St. on November 19 at 2:59 p.m. The Hicksville Hazmat team was requested to the scene.

A gas line main was struck at 550 Post Ave. on November 21 at 12:54 p.m. National Grid was requested to the scene.

Hicksville

A robbery occurred on November 20 at 9:15 p.m. at the Kay Jewelers in the Broadway Mall According to detectives, two male blacks initially posed as customers before making verbal robbery demands and one subject threatened the use of a gun which was never displayed. The employees complied with their demands and handed over and undetermined amount of assorted jewelry. The subjects then fled from the store and exited the mall through the south doors alongside Macy’s. The subjects were described as follows: a male black, 6’0” tall in his 30’s, stocky build with a dark complexion and a thin mustache. He was wearing a navy blue hoody and a knit cap; male black, 5’8” tall in his late 20’s, stocky build and a scruffy beard. He was wearing a black hoody. At the time of the robbery there were 2 employees present, neither of which were injured. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous. 

A fatal accident occurred on South Broadway and South Oyster Bay Road when a car collided with a tractor trailer on November 21 at 12:35 a.m. According to detectives, a 2012 Freightliner was entering South Broadway (Route 107) from a driveway at 840 South Broadway in a northeast direction when it was struck by a 2005 Mercury traveling southbound being operated by Robert Coiro, 43, of Bethpage. The victim was pronounced at the scene at 12:44 a.m. The operator of the tractor trailer was not injured. The Mercury was impounded for safety checks. The investigation is ongoing.

Northbound Hicksville Road at Stewart Avenue was closed for the investigation of a car accident on November 21 at 5:39 a.m.

A fire was reported on the second floor of a police department at 43 Underhill Ave. on November 21 at 9:52 a.m. The fire was reported to have been contained at 10:05 a.m.

Bethpage

A house at 101 Round Swamp Road sustained fire damage on November 19 at 5:12 p.m. The reported cause was an oven.

Hicksville Road was closed in both directions on November 21 at 7:07 a.m. due to an accident investigation.

A fully-involved car fire occurred in a vehicle on the northbound side of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway and Powell Avenue on November 21 at 4:38 p.m. Traffic delays were reported in the area.

According to detectives, an unknown male black subject was operating a 2007 Honda southbound on Hicksville Road when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a telephone pole at Ludwig Lane on November 21 at 4:51 a.m. The subject was ejected from the vehicle and removed to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The vehicle, which had been reported stolen in New York City earlier, was impounded. The investigation is ongoing. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this accident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City

A motor vehicle accident on Zeckendorf Boulevard and the Meadowbrook Parkway occurred on November 19 at 5:37 p.m. in East Garden City. There were injuries reported as well as a spill, causing traffic delays in the area.

A gas main break occurred at 711 Stewart Ave. in East Garden City on November 21 at 10:24 a.m. Several nearby buildings were evacuated.

Officers received a call on November 15 at 4 p.m. for an intoxicated driver in the vicinity of Ninth Street. Upon checking the area, he located the subject, a male 48-year-old from Williston Park, operating his vehicle in Parking Field 9E. Upon an investigation, the subject was arrested for DWI (refused test).

Officers responded to a domestic incident on November 18 which resulted in the arrest of a male 39-year-old from Garden City for assault and criminal mischief. The subject reportedly choked the victim and also prevented the victim from calling the police.

West Hempstead

A fatal auto accident toccurred on November 22 at 2:05 a.m. when a male taxi driver, operating a 2004 Dodge Caravan, while traveling northbound on Hempstead Avenue, struck Johnny Bonilla, 22, of West Hempstead, who was walking in the roadway, south of Oakford Street. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a staff physician at 2:31 a.m.   No other injuries were reported. Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time.  The driver of the vehicle was administered a breathalyzer test at the scene yielding negative results.  The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks. 

Kerry A. Barron, 49, of Westbury, was arrested on November 17 for DWI at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Mayfair Avenue in West Hempstead.

Shanay T. Lewis, 27, of Huntington Station, was arrested on November 17 for DWI on Woodfield Road in West Hempstead.

An unknown person(s) caused damage to the front window of the T-Mobile store located at 590 Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead on November 17.
