Crimes Nearby: Fatal Motorcycle Accident, Crack Bust and School Evacuation

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

New Hyde Park Road was closed southbound from the LIRR tracks to Stewart Avenue due to a transformer in the roadway on November 7 at 4:50 p.m.

East Williston

A tree came down at 111 Bengeyfield Drive on the LIRR tracks of the Oyster Bay line on November 7 at 10:04 p.m.

Floral Park

The John Lewis Childs School at 10 Elizabeth St. was evacuated due to a gas leak in the area on November 6 at 10:05 a.m.

Roslyn

A fire occurred at a restaurant at 1380 Old Northern Blvd. on November 5 at 2:13 p.m.

Roslyn Heights

Three men were arrested for a burglary on November 8 at 1:15 a.m. in Roslyn Heights. According to detectives, John Coello, 22, of Union City, NJ, was observed on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore driving a vehicle with stolen registration plates. After attempting to pull the vehicle over, Coello attempted to flee, causing the investigating officer to pursue him. In an attempt to evade capture, Coello intentionally rammed an assisting New York State Trooper vehicle injuring the two troopers inside. The defendant’s vehicle was then eventually stopped and Coello was placed under arrest. A second vehicle that was initially with Coello’s vehicle was able to flee the scene and continue westbound on Sunrise Highway. That vehicle, occupied by Christopher Thomas, 26, of Matteson, IL, and Duane Holmes, 41, of North Bergen, NJ, was observed and stopped on Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre where they were placed under arrest without incident. A subsequent investigation revealed that the defendants, acting in consort, were in possession of property from a burglary they committed earlier that morning from Jet Communications, 55 Mineola Avenue, Roslyn Heights. The injured New York State Troopers suffered minor injuries, were taken to a local hospital, were treated and released. Coello is charged with two counts of second degree assault, third degree burglary, and reckless driving. Thomas and Holmes are both charged with third degree burglary. The defendants were arraigned on November 9 in First District Court, Hempstead.

Westbury

A car overturned on the eastbound side of the Northern State Parkway n November 9 at 6:04 a.m.

Hicksville

A large oil spill from a truck, consisting of about 50-60 gallons was reported on Cottage Boulevard on November 10 at 12:27 p.m. A fire was reported in a fully-involved truck at 1:05 p.m.

Franklin Square

Robbery Squad detectives are investigating a Robbery that occurred on Friday, November 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Franklin Square. According to detectives, two subjects, one being a male white in his 40’s, 5’ 7” tall with a thin build, wearing a blond wig, dark baseball cap and orange sunglasses was accompanied by a male black in his 40’s, 6’2” tall, stocky build, wearing a blue jacket with white sleeves and armed with two handguns, entered Capital One Bank at 550 Franklin Avenue and verbally demanded money from several tellers. After obtaining an undetermined amount of U.S. currency, the subjects fled out the rear door into the parking lot and were last seen heading northbound into the creek bed behind the Friendly’s store. At the time of the Robbery there were five employees present, none of whom were injured. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this Robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City

A fuel spill occurred on Euston Road and Salisbury Avenue from a tank that spilled from the back of a pickup truck on November 9 at 10 a.m.

A motorcycle traveling north on Washington Avenue struck a van traveling east on Stewart Avenue. The operator of the motorcycle, a male 20-year-old from Mineola, was fatally injured. The passenger on the motorcycle, a female 18-year-old from Mineola, received an arm injury injuries and was transported toWinthrop Hospital by ambulance.

Police arrested a Westbury man on October 24 at 1:55 a.m. after observing a vehicle traveling east on Stewart Avenue pass a red light at Franklin Avenue and then stop in the southbound lanes of Franklin Avenue blocking traffic. The officer began an investigation which resulted in the arrest of the driver, a male 41-year-old from Westbury, for Driving While Impaired by Drugs and Alcohol, two counts of possession of a controlled substance (crack and Xanax), passing a red light, uninsured operation and an outstanding Nassau County Alcohol Beverage Control Law Violation Warrant.

A man and woman were arrested early Friday morning after they allegedlyremoved tools and copper wire from several electrical trucks parked in East Garden City. The defendants allegedly forced entry into a construction parking lot where multiple electrical repair trucks were stored. Miller and Yates exited their vehicle, removed tools and copper wire from the trucks and placed the items into the trunk of the Hyundai. As they attempted to leave they were stopped by detectives.

West Hempstead

Two vehicles collided on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead early in the morning on November 4 at an intersection where the traffic signals have been out for days due to Hurricane Sandy. The accident occurred at 3:34 a.m. at the intersection at Westminster Road. Crime scene units were on the scene and at least one person sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to an area hospital. The other driver was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to a Nassau County Police spokeswoman.
