Crimes Nearby: Heroin, Prostitution and Manslaughter Charges

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Garden City Park

Police in Evanston, IL say alcohol was a contributing factor in the accidental drowning of Northwestern University sophomore Harsha Maddula, whose body was found in Wilmette Harbor in September 2012.

Mineola

The Nassau County Police Department’s Third Squad has released a photo of a suspect wanted in connection to a reported robbery at the Birchwood Court Apartment complex in Mineola. Crime Stoppers is seeking the public’s help with identifying the unknown suspect who reportedly  at about 11:15 a.m.

Lake Success

A three-car accident occurred on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway near exit 33 on Feb. 27 at 8:19 p.m. with injuries reported. All lanes were closed at 8:22 p.m. but were reopened shortly thereafter.

Westbury

A Plainview man was arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance on Feb. 24 at 2:05 a.m. in Westbury. According to officers, Paul Hannwacker, 46, was found in his car stopped at a 45 degree angle in the middle of the road on Rockaway Avenue at Old Country Road. Upon approaching and interviewing Hannwacker, he was found to be in an intoxicated condition and was placed under arrest. During his arrest Hannwacker was found to be in possession of narcotics without a prescription. During his arrest processing, the Third Squad was notified regarding his possession of narcotics and requested to interview him. During their interview, which took place later that morning, Hannwacker made statements indicating he had stolen a Target Visa card from his 85-year old mother in order to attain cash to support his addiction to drugs. A subsequent investigation revealed that Hannwacker, over the course of the prior two years, stole more than $100,000 from his mother, which included jewelry and monies from her bank accounts. Hannwacker is charged with second degree grand Larceny, six (6) counts of second degree forgery, first degree identity theft, two (2) counts of Grand Larceny 4th Degree, six (6) counts of Falsifying Business Records 1st Degree. Arraignment for those charges will be on 02/25/2013 at First District Court, Hempstead. Hannwacker, during his initial arrest for driving while intoxicated, is also charged with three (3) counts of seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, driving while ability impaired, drugs, driving while ability impaired, combined influence and a vehicle & traffic law violation. Arraignment for those charges took place on 02/24/2013 in First District Court, Hempstead.

A jury has convicted a Hempstead man for robbing two women of their pocketbooks at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Westbury Costco, according to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice. It took a jury about four hours to convict Randy Summerville, 32, of two counts each of Robbery in the First, Second, and Third Degrees, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree. He faces up to 25 years in prison at his April 8 sentencing.

Hicksville

The Second Squad is investigating a robbery that occurred on Feb. 22 at 10:05 p.m. on Kiwanis Place where a 38-year old male victim was walking in the vicinity of Saint James Place when he was approached from behind by two unknown male subjects. One subject struck the victim in the head while the second subject pulled him to the ground. The subjects began to kick the victim and an iPod was then removed from the victim’s pocket. Both subjects fled the scene on foot towards the Hicksville Long Island Railroad Station. The victim responded to the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. There is no further description of the subjects. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

A car accident occurred on Woodbury Road and Bethpage Road at about 7:16 p.m. on Feb. 24. Emergency personnel took 25 minutes to extract the aided who ere transported to Nassau University Medical Center.

A fire broke out in a kitchen at 38 Beacon Lane on Feb. 26 at 11:37 a.m. that involved a stove and the wall behind the stove on the second floor. A smoke condition existed after the fire was put out at 11:44 a.m.

A violent emotionally disturbed person was reported at 5 Mach Ave. on March 1 at 10:41 a.m. According to police an elderly man lunged at officers with a hatchet and then went into the house. The man also reportedly as

Woodbury

A car accident involving a grey Prius and a white box truck in the eastbound lanes of Jericho Turnpike and Woodbury Road on Feb. 27 at 11:33 a.m.

Floral Park

Jericho Turnpike and Flower Avenue was blocked on Feb. 25 at 7:47 p.m. due to fire department activity.

Franklin Square

A Valley Stream man was arrested for manslaughter in Franklin Square on February 27 at 9:15 p.m. According to detectives, Brian P. Daly, 24, was operating his 2008 Lincoln southbound on Franklin Avenue at a high rate of speed when he passed a red traffic signal light and struck a 2003 Ford that was traveling east on Corona Avenue. The defendant’s vehicle then redirected itself into northbound traffic and collided with a 2010 Subaru that was stopped for a red traffic light on Franklin Avenue at Corona Avenue. The operator was uninjured and refused medical treatment. The operator of the Ford is Christopher Decrescito, 46, of Franklin Square. He was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at 9:57 p.m. by a staff physician. The defendant was placed under arrest for driving under the influence and transported to a nearby hospital for injuries to his right hip and right arm. All vehicles were impounded for safety inspections. The investigation is ongoing. Daly is charged with second degree manslaughter, second degree vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated. He will be arraigned as soon as medically practical

Garden City

On Feb. 20, a joint investigation by Chase Bank staff on Seventh Street and the Garden City Police Department resulted in the arrest of a female 21-year-old from Far Rockaway for grand larceny, attempted grand larceny and four counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument. The subject had attempted to cash two forged checks in the amount of $4,600 when the alert bank staff determined that they were false.

Garden City detectives arrested a 24-year-old male from Levittown for criminal possession of a controlled substance (heroin) in Garden City Parking Field #6 on Feb. 26.

West Hempstead

Two Flushing women were arrested for prostitution Wednesday at a West Hempstead day spa that has now had a total of eight women arrested over the course of the last two months.
