Crimes Nearby: Medicaid Fraud, Memorial Day Accidents and Marijuana

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park
A pair of car accidents marred Memorial Day weekend in New Hyde Park Sunday night, causing the halting of traffic on both Hillside Avenue and on the Long Island Rail Road.


Mineola
An East Meadow woman was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend with a pair of scissors while they were in a car together outside his Mineola home.

Williston Park
An East Meadow man who worked as an executive chef in a Williston Park restaurant is one of 12 persons being charged with Medicaid fraud according to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.

Carle Place
An attempted robbery occurred in Carle Place on May 25 at 10:58 p.m. when according to detectives, a 22 year old female victim was about to enter the Chase Bank at 267 Old Country Road when she was approached by an unknown black male. The subject demanded money and when the victim refused she was struck in the face. The man then fled on foot northbound on Byrd Avenue. No injuries were reported and no money was taken. The subject is further described as 25 to 29 years of age, 5’6” tall, wearing a baggy black jacket and loose fitting light colored blue jeans. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Westbury
Two New Cassel men were at their residence on May 30, 2013 at 9 a.m. for a robbery that occurred in Westbury. According to detectives, on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at 11:45 a.m. Ralik Brooks, 20, and a yet to be apprehended male entered Westbury Art and Framing at 234 Post Avenue in Westbury wearing masks. One male displayed a handgun and ordered the 39-year old female store employee to open the safe and registers. When she refused she was struck in the head with the gun. The victim eventually complied and the males removed an undetermined amount of U.S. currency and fled the scene on foot northbound on Post Avenue. The victim was removed to an area hospital where she was admitted and treated for a laceration to the head. On May 30, 2013 Third Squad detectives received information that the defendant was at his residence and responded to the scene. A relative of the defendant directed police to a closet where Brooks was hiding. The defendant refused to comply with the officer’s commands and a struggle ensued. While attempting to affect the arrest a cousin of the defendant, Kenny Price, 30, became enraged and began to fight with officers. After further assistance arrived they were both taken into custody. Brooks was charged with first and second-degree robbery and resisting arrest.  He also had an open Nassau County arrest warrant for second degree criminal possession of a weapon as well as an open warrant from the Hudson County, New York Sheriff’s Department. Price was charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. They were arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on May 31.

A disturbance was reported at 336 Siegel St. in Westbury on May 30 at 9:11 a.m. Two ambulances and a squad were requested to the scene.

Franklin Square
Fourth Precinct police officers responded to the Best Yet Market at 696 Dogwood Ave. in Franklin Square on May 31 at 10:45 a.m. for a report of a foul odor in the building. When officers arrived they discovered numerous persons suffering from headaches, dizziness and nausea. Franklin Square Fire Department responded to the scene and detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide inside the store resulting from a gas leak. The Nassau County Police Department HazMat Unit and National Grid also responded to the scene. Ambulances from Franklin Square, West Hempstead, Elmont, Hempstead, Lakeview, Rockville Center and Mineola Fire Departments assisted at scene. A total of 18 persons were transported to an area hospital and twelve persons were treated at the scene.

Garden City
On May 24 Garden City detectives and Nassau County probation officers arrested a male 20-year-old at his Cathedral Avenue residence for possession of marijuana and for an open Hempstead traffic warrant.

Police arrested a female 46-year-old from Hicksville on Franklin Avenue on May 27 after committing the theft of a thermometer and over-the-counter medication valued at $70 from CVS. Fence parts valued at $200 were removed from a Hampton Road property on May 27.

A student walking home in the vicinity of Tremont Street was stopped by two males believed to be in their teens who asked the student if the student wanted candy, according to an alert issued to parents on the Garden City School District's website Friday.
