Garden City Park

A woman was struck and killed by a car as she crossed Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park on Nov. 12, according to Nassau County Police.

Mineola

A Hempstead man was arrested in Mineola on November 15, 2013 at 9:55 a.m. on multiple sexual assault and rape charges. According to detectives, on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, Ramone Smith, 23, contacted a 31-year old female via the Internet and had her respond to his residence. Smith then escorted the victim to the roof where he displayed a razor knife and sexually assaulted the female. He was located at his residence and taken into custody on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 9:50 pm. He was charged with predatory sexual assault, first degree criminal sexual act, first degree sexual abuse and third degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on September 4, 2013. Sometime during August of 2013 a 19-year old female victim was contacted by Smith via the Internet and arrangements were made for the victim to travel to his residence. The defendant and victim got into an elevator and Smith demanded the victim surrender lingerie she had in her possession. The victim complied and the defendant began to touch her in a sexual manner. Smith displayed a razor knife and a struggle ensued. The victim was able to gain control of the knife and fled after the elevator doors opened. Sometime during August and September of 2013 a 19-year old female victim was contacted by the defendant via the Internet and the victim responded to the defendant’s home. Smith led the female to the roof of the building where he displayed a box cutter and sexually assaulted her. After an investigation Smith was taken into custody at 252 Old Country Road where he was appearing in court in relation to his September 4, 2013 arrest. He was charged with predatory sexual assault, first degree rape, first degree criminal sexual act, first degree robbery, first degree sexual abuse and two counts of third degree criminal possession of a weapon. Roslyn

A robbery occurred on November 7, 2013 at 5:50 p.m in Roslyn where according to detectives, a white male, dressed in dark clothing, a hat, long black beard, and long black hair, entered the Citibank located at 1075 Northern Blvd. The man displayed a gun and ordered the six employees on the floor. He then forced a female employee to open the door to the teller stations and removed an unknown amount of money. The subject fled on foot northbound towards Northern Boulevard. There were no customers in the bank and no injuries reported. Detectives request anyone with information regarding the above crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. Carle Place

The eastbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway at exit 31 were closed due to a car accident at 5:42 a.m. on Nov. 16. 

Westbury

A car accident occurred in the westbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway at Brush Hollow Road on Sept. 19 at 7:52 a.m. causing heavy delays.

A robbery occurred on November 7 at 6 p.m. where according to detectives, an 18-year old male was walking on Powells Lane in the vicinity of Rockland Street when he was approached from behind by three unknown male black subjects. All of the subjects are described as 19 to 20 years of age with subject one wearing either a white jacket or sweatshirt, subject two wearing a black jacket or sweatshirt and subject three wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. The subjects pushed the victim to the ground, struck him about the head and face and removed a cell phone from his pants pocket. The victim was able to flee and refused medical attention at the scene. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. Jericho

The westbound Long Island Expressway HOV lane was closed on Nov. 7 at 6:34 a.m. due to a car accident.

The westbound side of the Long Island Expressway was closed at exit 40 on Nov. 13 at 4:18 a.m. due to a multi-car accident.

The north service road of the Long Island Expressway was closed west of Jericho Turnpike due to a car accident on Nov. 14 at 5:37 p.m.

Detectives are investigating a bank robbery that occurred on November 15 at 12:52 p.m. in Jericho. According to detectives, a male Hispanic entered Citibank, 1 Robbins Lane and handed a demand note to a teller. After being given an undisclosed amount of money, the subject fled the scene in an unknown direction. At the time of the robbery, five employees and two customers were present; none of whom were injured. The subject was further described as being 20-30 years old, about 5’6” tall, wearing a dark colored Nike long sleeved shirt, glasses and a dark baseball cap. Woodbury

A bank robbery occurred in Woodbury on November 15 at 9:09 a.m. According to detectives, an unknown male white subject with a stocky build, being in his forties, 5’10” tall, wearing a light colored winter cap, camouflage jacket and blue pants entered the Chase Bank at 7797 Jericho Turnpike and handed a demand note to a teller. After obtaining an undetermined amount of money the subject left the bank in an unknown direction. Ten employees and four customers were present during the robbery. No injuries were reported. Hicksville

A car accident occurred on Nov. 3 at 9:13 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Wantagh State Parkway and the Northern State Parkway

All westbound lanes on Old Country Road at Levittown Parkway were closed at 6:03 a.m. on Nov. 12 due to a car accident. They were reopened at 10:06 a.m. 

Bethpage

A Plainview man was arrested in Bethpage on November 9, 2013 at 1:05 a.m. According to police, John Derrico, 51, operated a 2013 Ford southbound in the northbound lanes of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (RTE 135) in the vicinity of Exit 8 (Powell Avenue). The defendant’s vehicle then collided with a 2007 Volvo being operated northbound in the center lane and continued on striking the center median. The 29-year old male operator of the Volvo was not injured. A Highway Patrol Bureau police officer responded and observed flames coming from underneath the hood of the defendant’s vehicle. He was able to remove Derrico from the car. A subsequent investigation determined the defendant was operating under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. He was taken into custody and removed to an area hospital for medical evaluation. The vehicle he was driving was impounded. It is undetermined as to where Derrico entered the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. The defendant was charged with first degree reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving the wrong direction on a one-way street. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on November 10.

Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department are seeking the public’s help with identifying and locating an unknown subject wanted in connection with a Forcible Touching case that occurred in Bethpage on November 4 at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the vicinity of Stewart Ave. and Williams St. The unknown subject approached a 45-year old female victim walking to her car from the 7-11 store. The subject asked the victim for a light, then asked for a ride, exposed himself, and then grabbed the victim’s breasts before fleeing down Williams Street. The suspect is described as a white male, 23-28 years of age, 5’6”-5’8” tall, slim build, light complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, brown decaying teeth, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt. Garden City

On Oct. 29 a 61-year-old man from Mineola filed a police report stating he was walking in Parking Field 7S when he was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. Garden City detectives arrested the subject for filing a false police report after it was determined the incident did not occur.

On Nov. 6 officers conducted a commercial vehicle checkpoint on Cathedral Avenue. Seven vehicles were inspected and 61 tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations. One driver, a 28-year-old man from Mineola, was charged with driving with a suspended license.

On Nov. 10 police stopped a vehicle for swerving to the wrong side of the road on Washington Avenue. The driver, a 45-year-old man from Mineola, was arrested for felony DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content) due to a prior DWI offense, operating a vehicle without a court ordered interlock device, possession of alleged cocaine, driving on the wrong side of the road, two lane violations, no seatbelt and uninsured operation.

West Hempstead

On Nov. 9 at 6:40 p.m., an individual from Elmont was arrested for shoplifting on Cherry Valley Avenue.

On Nov. 10 at 11 p.m., an unknown person(s) caused damage to a vehicle on Sycamore Street.
