Crimes Nearby: Police Car Accident, Hit Pedestrian and Switched License Plates

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

A 19-year old pedestrian was  near Leonard Boulevard on August 19. Nassau County Police ambulance transported the victim, who suffered head trauma, to a local hospital. He is listed in serious but stable condition.

A motor vehicle accident occurred at Hillside Avenue and Lakeville Road on August 24 at 9:54 a.m. Injuries were reported at the scene.

An accident involving a New York State Police car occurred in the westbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway near exit 29 on August 20 at 11:17 p.m. The state trooper was conscious with minor injuries.

Westbury

A fire broke out at 600 Merchants Concourse on August 19 at 4:46 p.m. in a boiler of a garbage dumping facility. Two additional engines were requested to the scene. The fire was contained at 5:17 p.m.

The Bank of America at 248 Post Ave. was robbed on Aug. 24 at 2:14 p.m. by a Hispanic male wearing a hat who reportedly held customers at gunpoint, threatened the use of a bomb and demanded money. The teller complied and the suspect exited the bank with an undetermined amount of U.S. currency onto Post Avenue, fleeing in an unknown direction, but according to one source towards the high school. Approximately 10 employees and 5 customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery.  No injuries were reported. Two men were arrested for a burglary which occurred on Friday, August 24 at 2:24 P.M. in Westbury. According to detectives, Second Precinct Officers responded to a Glen Road home for a burglary in progress. Luis Perez, 20, of the Bronx, and Miguel Jesus Hidalgo, 18, of Manhattan, were stopped as they attempted to flee from police. They were identified by witnesses as the men seen at the Glen Road home. Jewelry was recovered near an open rear window of the same home. The investigation revealed that both suspects had gloves in their possession.  Both men are charged with second degree burglary and possession of burglar tools and were arraigned on August 25 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Hicksville

A fire occurred in the basement of a vacant building at 344 Duffy Avenue on August 19 at 5:08 p.m. Companies from Bethpage stood by for assistance.

A house fire occurred at 11 Linden Blvd. on August 21 at 9:46 a.m. Two victims sustained burns at the scene.

A car overturned at South Oyster Bay Road and Jamaica Avenue on August 22 at 1:37 p.m. No pin was reported.

A shooting was reported on Clarissa Drive on August 24 at 12:18 p.m. Fire department and police personnel responded to the scene for the report of one person shot.

Franklin Square

The Fifth Squad is investigating a burglary that occurred on Monday August 20 at 1:20 p.m. in Franklin Square. According to detectives, a male victim 62 years of age, arrived home to his Rintin Street residence and discovered a male subject in the upstairs of the home. He confronted the subject who fled on foot through the front door and was last seen southbound on Ribbon Street. He is described as a white male with a thin build wearing gray shorts, tan shirt, sandals in his late 20’s to early 30’s, 5’9” to 6’1” tall, balding with brown hair on the sides. The victim reports an unknown amount of jewelry was missing. There were no injuries reported. Detectives request anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

On August 19 officers stopped a vehicle for defective brake lights on Ninth Street. Upon an investigation, the driver, a male 17-year-old from Elmont, was charged with driving with switched license plates, defective brake lights, unregistered vehicle, uninsured operation and uninspected vehicle. The vehicle was also impounded.

Numerous sets of tires and rims were stolen from new vehicles stored in the Nissan storage facility on Stewart Avenue on August 22 with an estimated loss of $78,000.

A water main break was reported in East Garden City at Stewart Avenue and Merrick Avenue on August 24 at 9:40 a.m.

Malverne-West Hempstead

Police say a suspect broke into a home on Baldwin Drive in West Hempstead around 12:37 p.m. on August 20, but fled without any proceeds after he was spotted by the homeowner. Police are  and released a descrption of the suspect, asking anyone with information regarding the crime to call Crime Stoppers.

A car overturned at the intersection of the Southern State Parkway and Hempstead Avenue on August 21 at 7:29 a.m. One occupant was .

An unknown black male suspect entered the 7-Eleven located at 310 Hempstead Avenue around 5:15 a.m. on August 24. The suspect  and demanded money. After obtaining an undetermined amount of cash, the suspect fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. No injuries were reported. The suspect is described as having a slight build, 6’ tall, wearing a white bandana over his face, New York Yankees baseball cap, black hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Detectives request anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
