Crimes Nearby: Postal Package Thieves, Fallen Cement Mixer and Car Break-Ins

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding New Hyde Park.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Roslyn Heights

Powerhouse Road at Roslyn Road ws closed due to an auto accident investigation on Oct. 29 at 7:49 a.m. It was reopened at 1:39 p.m. As a result of the accident a LIPA pole was knocked down causing a power outage in the area.

Westbury

A car fire was reported on Grand Boulevard and Cross Street on Oct. 28 at 12:33 a.m. as a result of a car accident.

A three-car accident occurred on the eastbound side of the Northern State Parkway prior to the Wantagh State Parkway on Oct. 30 at 7:13 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Hicksville

Old Country Road was closed in both directions due to a car accident on Oct. 27 from 1:19 p.m. to 5:13 p.m. According to detectives, at 12:36 p.m., a 47-year old male was traveling westbound on Old Country Road in a 1999 GM pickup truck when he collided with a 2007 Nissan driven by a female 42 years of age. The Nissan was eastbound on Old Country Road making a left turn onto Broadway (Route 107) to head northbound. A male passenger, age 3 was ejected from the Nissan and suffered head trauma. A male passenger, age 12, was in the rear seat of the Nissan and sustained lacerations to his head and face. The female driver suffered minor injuries. All three were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries. The male driver was uninjured. Both vehicles were impounded for brake and safety checks. There appears to be no criminality at this time. The investigation is continuing.

A three-car accident occurred on Oct. 31 at 6:12 p.m. at Jerusalem Avenue and Spindle Road. Two persons were transported to a nearby hospital.

Old Bethpage

Detectives are investigating a series of larcenies that occurred in Old Bethpage, Farmingdale and Bethpage on Oct. 30 at 11:15 a.m., 12:35 p.m. and 1:20 p.m., respectively. According to detectives, at 11:15 a.m., two male subjects, driving what appeared to be a white 2000 Dodge Odyssey or Chrysler Town and Country mini van with a black bumper, bearing out of state plates, attempted to open a locked U.S. Postal Service male truck, which was parked in front of a residence on Pasture Lane in Old Bethpage. When the subject saw the doors were locked, he re-entered the mini van and left the scene. At 12:35 p.m., the subjects took several Federal Express boxes, which were left in front of a residence on Van Cott Avenue in Farmingdale, removed the contents, left the boxes behind and fled the scene in their vehicle. At 1:20 p.m., the subjects removed a UPS package and another package from two residences on Avoca Ave. in Bethpage. The subjects are both described as black males. The passenger in the vehicle is 25-30 years of age, thin build, has a beard and mustache, short hair and was wearing a white tee shirt. There is no description of the driver. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City

On Oct. 23 a cement mixer fell off a trailer on New Hyde Park Road. The driver of the towing vehicle was issued 21 tickets for traffic and safety violations including, unsecured loads, uncovered load, improper trailer hitch, unsecured cab body and defective safety chains.

On Oct. 26 police arrested a 61-year-old Hempstead man for the theft of $208 in merchandise from Sears.

On Oct. 27 police observed and apprehended a 20-year-old man from Mahopac and an 18-year-old from Oceanside for trespassing on the grounds of the Garden City Bus Garage. In addition, the 20-year-old was found to be in possession of a bottle of vodka and was charged with alcohol possession.

West Hempstead

On the nights of Oct. 18-21, vehicles on Westminster Road, Marlboro Road, Hempstead Avenue and Chestnut Street were entered with some property reported taken.
